Palm Beach area - 3 days of golf - where?
« on: October 10, 2003, 11:03:57 AM »
Going to the Palm Beach area later this month with seven chums to play the best four courses with which we can gain access. As it stands currently:

1) Medalist
2) MacArthur
3) Trump Int'l
4) Loblolly Pines

Any suggestions as to daily fee courses, or others that shouldn't be missed. (I would love to nix Trump - very expensive unescorted, not to mention the name on the door! :P)

Hermanbarron,

Emerald Dunes.

But, call me and we can discuss some other alternatives.

Hermann:
The PGA of America complex at Port St. Lucie is reasonable and has several courses.  It is a relatively short drive from the Palm Beach Area.
Emerald Dunes is very good. Don't know the cost.
Best,
Dave

Abacoa (Jupiter) has a daily fee course it is inexpensive and while I have not played it several of my friends have and they said it was pretty good and very reasonable.

You could play McArthur and Medalist in 1 day. They are next door to each other.

Ditto with Jupiter Hills and Lobbolly Pines.

Ditto with The Bear Club and The Ritz.

You could finish your trip with Dye Preserve and Admirals Cove.

Leave Trump for "The Donald", a bit too artifical and pretenous.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

If you are willing to venture N of Palm Beach County, the Dye course at PGA Reserve is very good.  There are also two Fazios called N and S.  PGA Reserve is on the interstate near Port St. Lucie.

I think you'll enjoy Trump.  It was great fun for me.  It reminded me of the "fantasy" designs on Links for my PC.

Try to get some help from the shop before you go out on Medalist.  I think I played some of the holes too short as the fairways cut off a lot.  My caddie was no help, as he thought he was caddying for Jack Nicklaus.  (Anyone else have this problem?  I'm way better than most people they'd caddy for, but they still pretend I'll be able to execute any shot I want.)

Enjoy the trip.

John--

Your issue at the Medalist may be that the yardages on all of the sprinkler heads are to the front of the green.  Unfortunately, the caddie is expected to know the green depths and the hole location and our caddie did not the last time I was there.  Too bad to because I think the Medalist has a lot of things going for it.

I would suggest trying to play Mayacoo Lakes if you have some extra time down there, it's a Muirhead/Nicklaus design that's pretty good and should not be impossible to get on this time of year.  It's about 7 minutes from Emerald Dunes.  Emerald Dunes is pretty pricey, but a fun course.  I agree with the others about the course at PGA facility in Port St. Lucie, but be forewarned, play there is really slow.

mike - you're going away again - geez
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

I've heard that the Dye Preserve was formally known as Cypress Links.  Is that true, and if so, what have they done to the course and have they changed the ownership or membership structure at the course.  My former boss owned it and I always played it when I was in the area.
If you are playing the Medalist as an unaccompanied guest be forewarned that unless the member has agreed to charge it to his account you cannot pay the guest fee by credit card.  I played it a few years ago and it was $235 in cash plus the caddie fee so make sure you have enough cash with you.  It is a really good course and to my mind is more Pete Dye than Greg Norman.  Old Marsh is another Dye course in the area which I think is well worth playing.

BV beat me to it...play WPBCC, an old Dick Wilson layout that is now a public course.  Just a simple, fun place to play.

In all due respect to Pat, I found Emerald Dunes to be over rated and really very average and definitely over priced.

Tiger Bernhardt,

.....Any suggestions as to daily fee courses.....

Hermanbarron asked for suggestions with respect to daily fee courses, I provided a suggestion, absent any assessment.

I'd stick with those 4. And I'll take issue with Adams accessment of the Medalist. The Medalist has one of the best caddie programs anywhere. The markers on the course are to the front of the greens. But there are daily hole locations right up front at the caddiemasters podium as you pull in. All caddies are of course required to have one. How Adam got a caddie who didn't have one is quite a mystery. Not only do I carry a hole location sheet I also carry a Bushnell Laser. Adam, can you give me a few details such as when you played, who you played with and maybe if you can remember the name of the caddie?

Agree with redanman that WPB muni is a lot of fun.

Emerald Dunes is worth seeing, if simply to get a glimpse into what Tom Fazio does with a crappy property.

Please avoid Polo Trace...yikes.

I think Tom Fazio did a good job with Emerald Dunes. Dead flat piece of land, no trees to speak of, and minimal budget.

Pat, I am not saying do not go there. I am saying do not have expectations of a great course. It was presented to me as the 3rd best public or private in the area after Seminole and Jupitor Hills. It is in the same world or maybe a little lower than the better course at PGA National to me.

I noticed no one suggested Pine Tree in Boynton (just south of WPB). Was that an intentional omission?

Whomever presented that opinion must have limited experience in playing all of the courses in that area, or limited judgement skills.   ;D

I can see why you were disappointed.

Boca Rio and Pine Tree wouldn't disappoint you, but don't take my word for it, ask others.

Stay away from PGA National Champion.  The poster child for soulless, factory golf.  An even worse offender than Doral.

Old Marsh, Loblolly and Jupiter Hills are fabulous if you can get on.  Emerald Dunes is fun and has some similarities with Donald's course.  If Trump is significantly more, Emerald Dunes is a far better choice.

I'm in agreement with the PGA Reserve recommendations.  I've played and enjoyed South and Dye.  I've heard mixed things about the conditioning there lately, though.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Gulfstream Golf Club in Gulfstream/Delray - a relatively flat Donald Ross on a tight piece of property with some fantastic small greens. Pretty private I believe, but definitely worth playing if you have the opportunity. I think Tom Paul is a fan, or at least I think I remember him fondly reminiscing about his time there.

The drive to Gulfstream down A1A from Palm Beach is pretty nice as well, and certainly beats the trip across I-95 to Emerald Dunes.

What is going on with the renov/restor-ation of Lost Tree?

I'd also offer the recommendation of The Everglades Club. Not demanding,  and certainly not close to the top of the PB area, but fun nevertheless. I haven't seen it since it was restored by Silva, but given the quality of his work at another Raynor FL course (Mtn. Lake), that alone probably makes it worth a look.

Lost tree redid their tees among others things. Their tees were done with Pastpallum and they are the best tees I have ever seen :)

Have not played Boca Rio Mike,so can't comment. I was staying with courses north of Pine Tree. Mirasol is also getting positive reviews
