The 5th hole (1st hole this week) is such a bad starting hole with water all down the left side. They did this so that the old 14-18th holes would turn into 10-14 so they would be played in all matches. Those holes are great holes and it would be a shame if barley any match made it to 17 or 18.


The 17th and 18th holes this week are the old 3rd and 4th holes, which are two of the weaker holes on the course. The course just isn't ideal for a match play event but they did the best they could.

They changed the routing of Hazeltine for the Ryder Cup so this seems like a good idea. Though it is strange to have a par 3 as the 18th hole. When was the last time at Ryder Cup had no. 18 as a par 3 hole?

Harding Park changed its routing when hosting both the Presidents Cup and the World Matchplay to make sure holes 16, 17 & 18 (the most scenic and telegenic on the course) were moved up to the middle of the back 9.

Seems to me you can have a successful matchplay style tournament on a wide array of courses...with the more "1/2" par holes the better.


Hell Lincoln Park in San Fran would be an epic match play location, warts and all.  Who wouldn't love to see the big boys tee it up there and see what kind of daring shots they'd take on. Fairness matters a ton less as you don't have to worry about protecting the field per se, in that its just you and your competitor...
