Mayday-Don't make me depose that shadowy character that masquerades as a chemistry professor to acknowledge your pronouncement that "There is PV for inland golf and then everything else". I am paraphrasing but that is close to verbatim and uttered while on the grounds of the Crump Cup a few years ago if you recall. ;D

I just don't understand threads like this.

Are the Stones "better" than Led Zeppelin?
Are boxers "better" than briefs?
Is Yosemite better than Yellowstone?
Is Ireland better than Scotland?

There are only so many ways to start a thought provoking thread. And few of those work.

My friend Mayday is likely just looking to prompt a discussion of the relative merits of Oakmont and PV. His opener addresses specifically the matter of presentation, which is wonderful in and of itself, but offers the opportunity for others to share their thoughts in different areas, if so desired.

And I've been to both Yosemite and Yellowstone and can tell flat out that John Connolly is not just wrong, he must be smoking something to say no to that...

Led Zeppelin is the band that Keith Richards wished he had started and played in...;-)
Boxer briefs rule.

Yosemite is "sofa king" much cooler than Yellowstone.
Scotland wins by a wide margin....;-)

I don't think trees are used all that exclusively at PV and after playing it a few times, have never felt trees come into play all that often unless you really miss on your tee shot. On this premise alone, I don't think it's better.  In general, PV has more variety.

Chris,

The tree impact on play is only one thing. The effect on turf is also important. The next time you go to PVGC bring me along and I'll show you.

Lol, would love that.

I'm no turf specialist, but didn't see any issue with trees having a negative impact on it.  They also took down a bunch of trees at the start of the season to open things up a bit more.  I think they also implemented controlled burns in spots to promote healthy foliage (?), so perhaps that helps the turf as well.

If I had to play only 2 courses in the world, and these were the only 2, I'd only play Pine Valley. I believe Pine Valley is everything positive about a course including fun to play and replay while Oakmont is certainly a test of one's game, it is an extreme test is patience and maturity, wherein I lack both as a golfer. Oakmont dishes out punishment and humbles the golfer, I don't go to the golf course for that.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
