1974 PGA at Tanglewood on Golf Channel
« on: August 02, 2017, 11:13:02 PM »
Just a thread for general discussion and comment.

I always picture every golf course in the 1970's as having shapeless, blobby bunkers. I guess I was wrong. The course looks like it could have been built quite recently, to me.

Love watching the Sam Snead footage.  62 years old and that was his 3rd straight top 5 in the PGA.

No joke, I saw that final leaderboard and was amazed to see Slammin' Sam there.

There was a time (1980's) when Tanglewood Park was a premier public golf destination. In the spring 4/5 of the cars were from Ohio. We played there every weekend and with balata and wood it was a strong test, from the 6400 yd tees we played. They are committed to redoing some things there which is good news as it has declined from its pinnacle.

What TF said about balatas and persimmon makes me recall that when I watch something like this, I can't help but notice that ...my god did the ball ever curve in those pre-90s eras!...whew.

Also, while the fairways looked to be 33-40 yards wide, that first cut, never mind the rough itself, was no joke...on 17 (the same foursome where Cole whiffs from under the pine)...one of the players couldn't get it within 40 yards of the pin from like 145 yards out of that "first cut"...

And more data on the ever - related subject... 5 and 6 irons were the bracket from 165 -185 yds... almost 50 yards longer today, on anecdotal viewings...

I noticed the ball flights as well. All much lower and almost always curving in one direction or the other. Jack and Lee especially.

The other thing that stands out is how much faster everyone plays. Those guys didn't waste time. Even Nicklaus who was considered a slow player in his day is downright punctual compared to some guys today.

It makes me sad to think WTF we have done to our game....
If I see one more Golf "app" I'm going to scream

Funny watching Firestone and 439 yard drives and 467 yard par 4's reduced to driver wedges and the announcers going on and on about how could anyone miss a green with a wedge...
Well if you PW goes 150 and your SW 105, there are some serious gaps in there..even if you throw in a gap wedge at 125
Seems like the modern game might require 14 wedges alone...

Renovations are in the cards. Money has been approved- 6.9M for the 2 courses- and work will include new irrigation, cart paths and bunker work.  http://triadgolf.com/index.php/2017/02/27/major-improvements-are-in-store-for-tanglewood-park-in-clemmons/

From the picutres on the website, some tree work could be done too.

Not really. Take a look at the aerial.  There are many holes on the championship course where trees literally don't come into play at all. In fact, many greens have absolutely no trees around them. The handful of holes that do play through trees have rather wide corridors.

I've only played the championship course, and I really enjoyed it.  For those that don't like RTJ, I'd encourage you to check it out. It's quite playable, far from monotonous, and very reasonable.  I hope to see the second course soon.
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda...

The second course is rumored to be in worse shape than the championship course.  It has a nice front nine that is relatively tame and open. The back nine is a car ride away and very stout. Narrow corridors, longer, and hillier that front. Not a good walking nine IMO

I am with you in that I have always enjoyed the championship course. When the Vantage Sr tour event was there the course was always kept in great shape per contract conditions. When it went away with the end of tobacco advertising so did the conditions.

Yeah, this thread reminds me...

I was cleaning off DVR space this weekend, and came upon this nostalgic broadcast from last summer...so I watch it and though he had it in control, it still comes down to a nervous 2.5 footer by Trevino on the last...

First it wasn't a clean-up tap-in...it was 2+ feet for the Pga and he marked the ball....he wasn't away (he would later apologize to Nicklaus after he made it, with a sheepish "Sorry I had to get that over with" handshake)...no harm, but interesting...

MORE forensically interesting is that in replacing the ball, which he did quickly, he absolutely pulled a "Lexi Thompson" by replacing it fractionally forward of the mark spot...though dim on a 1974 broadcast...to me its discernible...the visible writing on the ball, whose position is fixed by its hold in the thumb and forefinger, is now at an angle and position that renders it forward of the spot it was marked in.

Those who still have access to it, can decide for themselves...but no matter what your visual decision, I think there have been scores of errors, decisive or not, gone unpenalized within the tolerance of Lexi's replacement of that ball...
