Vilamoura Old v San Lorenzo

Currently in the Algarve. Have 5 rounds booked but the 6th is yet to be decided upon. Which one would you choose between VO & SL and why?

San Lorenzo for me. Just a more interesting and varied course. VO isn't bad but I thought it was a tad forgettable. Although I must confess I preferred Monte Rei, played in the same trip, to either. I say that so you may calibrate my opinion, MR being a Nicklaus design and therefore .....

Played Monte on Monday. The thing is I've been told that they have spent quite a bit of cash on VO and SL wasn't in the best of conditions at the moment

Sam,

FWIW, it’s been a few years but you are kind of comparing an apple to an orange. VO is a very nicely routed old fashioned course which I’ve played a couple of times and greatly enjoyed. The last time I was there is over ten years ago and the bunkering, while well enough placed for strategy, was of the simple oval variety which kind of belied it’s age. If they have spent money then they may have updated that but for me the way the course was laid out in a kind of old fashioned way was the best bit about it.

San Lorenzo is a bit more of a hybrid in the sense it has holes playing between housing and others that are in splendid isolation down on the water. It appeared more modern although not sure there is that much difference in age. I recall speaking to pro golfer about it and he had it as his favourite course. He didn’t think it the best or the most challenging but there was something about it that just made it very enjoyable. I think that sums it up nicely.
Conditioning aside, whichever you pick I don’t think you will be disappointed.

After trying to decide which one to play, I did the sensible thing and played both.  I would have to go for VO as the one to play. I just felt it was more natural with the flow of holes, not saying SL is bad but VO would get my vote BUT my favourite so far has been Palmares, without doubt. I felt Palmares had everything I need for a game of golf

San Lorenzo was once in the GOLF Magazine top 100 in the world ... it was the first entry that made me wonder whether the rankings had been corrupted by outside influence.  If it's clearly less attractive than Vilamoura, then its  history is that much more suspicious.

...and Vilamoura was the only Portugal entry in the WAoG back in the day. Not sure how many are currently in it.
FWIW, I'm such a fan of Penina. There's just such a feeling of cloistered isolation and olde worlde charm there. Very similar to CPC or PV in many ways. I swear I saw the ghost of Henry Cotton wandering the fairways there one evening. Either that, or a bloke in a white suit and hat was taking the piss...!
