During a tournament, is a great golf course more likely to:


A) Cause the field to scatter and have a handful of players separate themselves


or


B) Cause the field to bunch with no real separation in scoring

Not an exact answer to your question, but for everything but the majors the most common phrase heard among those who actually do it, regarding course set up is to "protect the bottom half of the field from embarrassing themselves."

Seems like that would be a goal of the opens as well, no? Your typical PGA event shouldn't really have to worry about the bottom half of the field. Those guys are awfully good, too.
