Repton and MacKenzie connection?
« on: October 06, 2003, 02:50:38 PM »
I read The Good Doctor Returns by Geoff Shackelford a while ago and in it he mentions that MacKenzie liked Humphry Repton's work.

Could anyone let me know if this reference is actually true or is it just something Geoff came up with because it was a fictional story.  Maybe Geoff can answer it.

If this thread sounds as if I am provoking I do not mean it to sound like that, I just have a opinion about it that i will share if it is true.

I can't recall whether MacKenzie made comments regarding Repton's work before.  I do think I recall that "Capability" Brown influenced MacKenzie (and Repton).  It's also interesting to note that Frederick Law Olmsted's firm did some residential planning for some of MacKenzie's projects--including Pasatiempo and Augusta National.  Of course, by that time Olmsted's firm was run by his son.

Brian,
Although I can't be 100% positive, I believe both Repton and MacKenzie were strong advocates for, and great users of, the Survey, Analysis and Design methodology during their illustrious careers. Their empoyment of Landscape Character Assessment and their adherence to National Vegetation Classification guidelines almost certainly helped them produce some of their finest works!!!

Has the sun set for the Winter yet???

And Back on Topic....

I'd have to say that I firmly believe that good Landscape Design principles are exactly the same as Good Golf Course Design principles.
It's interesting how many of the UK's Designed Landscapes have since become Golf Courses. Many of the big country houses are now swish hotels using their former policies and farmland as the basis for good parkland courses. Is this a uniqely British phenomenon??
