I think so...but I'm not sure. Well maybe but not sure the shape was what was needed....my best one was one where Tillinghast had pooped next to a huge oak tree and Donald Ross had whizzed in a creek with a small waterfall on it...but I just couldn't decide what to do with it...

I had the same problem Mike did, but he managed to overcome it while I on the other hand couldn't. My own fledgling career was derailed after only my 2nd solo design by a less than ideal site and an overly meddlesome client, as well as by a set of draconian environmental restrictions. The land had some undulation, some sand, several natural green-sites, and a small creek meandering through it -- but there wasn't enough of any of it to produce the top rated championship test the client had fantasized about. Plus, I don't know how any architect could be expected to find 18 great golf holes on just 400 acres of land! Even after hours of trying I could only find seven - but the client steadfastly refused to buy the additionally plot of land that was right there, abutting the site. (I think there were at least 12-15 great golf holes to be found on that 400 acres - but alas I could only dream of finding them.) I believe - perhaps egotistically - that I'd still be a working architect today if only I'd had the benefit of a few great sites in the early days, when it mattered most.

I thought the site Cateechee Golf Club was on was quite good.

Years ago, as an apprentice, I was complaining about another staffer getting a better site and budget.  My mentor asked how I knew my project wasn't going to be great before I designed it?  For that matter, wasn't it my job to make it great?  Kind of put me in my place.

Lots of great courses have been built on average sites, thus making them de facto great sites, no?

Please name me a few that have been built in the last 20 years.  Not trying to replace Pat Mucci here -- just trying to show that the standard has shifted a bit from when Oakmont and Winged Foot were anointed as top-10 courses.

A lot of the problem is that the term "great" has been corrupted to correspond to being included in some magazine's top-100 list.  [Which has led to demands from clients to make the top 25!]

I don't disagree with your mentor's point, though.  If you're going to take a job, it's your job to make the course great, as long as your client supports the endeavor.

Me too.  I think both Longshadow and Cateechee are on interesting land.

Thanks Mark.
It will close for a couple of months on 6/1 and we will do some renovations such as new greens, bunkers, length etc.
