Has Gil Hanse ever had a great site?
« on: April 30, 2017, 07:38:36 PM »

This was pointed out to me the other day.

Sand, water, interesting land movement?

Is there a better site than Rustic Canyon?

I imagine he was happy with what he has had to work with at Streamsong for the Black course.

Im curious that you add water to your requirements for a site to be great?  Or do you just mean for irrigation?

Royal Sydney will be a reasonably good site in terms of sand and decent movement, if only it were about 30-50% bigger.  But I am sure he will fit something in there.

Its an abandoned strip mine.  Spoil piles aren't exactly Bandon.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I believe  the current  Gil Hanse   site  near Cobbtown,  GA  is excellent.  Lively terrain and good soil.  Jeff Stein and Kyle  Franz think highly of  it.

Though the Hingham site was very challenging  to create/ mold  the final composition is superb.

It's relative.

Most of his sites have been better than 90% of architects even get once.

Of the few courses I've played by him, Craighead was probably the least impressive base site, given that it wasn't sand based and was without huge land movement. But even it was next to the sea with great views and plenty natural features.

And a really cool man-made feature.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

A high-traffic, existing, over-rated course, to which he's been asked to make modifications. It is a tight plot, with less movement than most would like, fixed clubhouse position, and some boundary issues. The soil is not that great, and the vegetation is not good.

The one in Georgia is a great site, better than Streamsong, which was a really good site too.
Boston was a great site, split by a road, clearly that bothers others more than me.

But Ally is right, he's seen better than some will ever see already...
With every golf development bubble, the end was unexpected and brutal....

Rio was a really good site - maybe not great but good enough to make a fantastic course.

Is it fair to say that Gil has so far been a disappointment with his original courses? He clearly does a fantastic job with restoration work but it seems his original work is not quite in the same league.

The real test will be his new design of the current #4. With #2 adjoining and Mid Pines, Dormie plus other top notch courses in the back yard this will be a defining moment.

Not really, it had been land devolved at one point for commercial development so large areas of the site had been flattened significantly he had to undo all of that.

I also think Boston Golf Club is a great course. The road thing didn't bother me either.

Mike Trenham,

I was referring to that great rolling ground we have around Philly. He didn't have the awkwardness of Inniscrone for sure.
He had challenges at Applebrook but a great course could be built and he did a nice job.

While it seems he's had a lot of good sites, I'm not sure I would call any of those "great".

Great would be something like Bandon or the Sand Hills....

Seems like this is the obvious choice as his best site.

Some good comments here as well.
