The railway line at St Andrews
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:26:35 AM »
I don't recall seeing many photos of TOC when the railway line was still there so I did some googling and found the ones below.

Does anyone have any others they could be post?

I think I've seen a photo of James Braid playing from the railway circa very early 1900's but I can't recall where I saw it!

When my wife was a little girl in St Andrews the regular passenger train to Leuchars Junction was hauled by an angine named Kettledrummel. It was withdrawn in the 50s. If you could find a picture of it she would be delighted.

Mark, lovely old film of the RR lines on Fife coast, and old timey music.  i enjoyed the bonus look at Leven Links and I believe Crai as well as the glimpse of the line coming in along 15 16 at TOC with the R&A backdrop finish. Pity the film ends several minutes before the music.  Can't get enough of that old stuff... ;D

I have continued googling on this subject and found this short film which has views back down the 18th at TOC. Film has 191-1918 in the title so I guess that is the relevant time period.

Presumably the railway sheds are the buildings visible in the far distance from around the 10 sec mark in the film.

Whats interesting about that clip is that there appears to be two cuts of rough!

Go here:

And type 'old course railway' into the search engine. There's a few there.

There's also some truly brilliant old movies here:

Type 'old course' or 'st andrews' into the search engine and lose yourself for hours...!

RJ,
I laughed at the three chaps basking in what was presumably glorious sunshine (at the three minute mark), unexpected possibly unprecedented weather! Talking about puffing "billies" there was no shortage of puffing "jocks" in the footage as pipe and cigarette smokers calmed their nerves!

Cheers Colin

So true Colin.  It is a wonder how 'big tobacco' had the entire world enslaved, particularly then.

May the poor chap RIP at 2:40 as he tees it up at the starters hut.  He suffers the same affliction as I do.   ::)
