Best Classic Scorecards
« on: January 18, 2017, 09:10:28 PM »
I thought I had seen a thread before but can't find it.  What tracks have the best, old school scorecards?  A few I've come across that I like are Yale, NGLA, and Waverley (OR).  What are everyone's favorites?  The simpler the better in my book.

It doesn't get too much more minimal than Friar's Head (not my picture):

Pine Needles and Essex County Club in MA both have old stymie-measure-size cards (meaning one side is 6").

I like yardages, so the FH card might be a touch too minimalist for me!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Canterbury has a small, simple scorecard just for the tournament tees, stored in a small box just off the back tee on the first hole. I used to have a couple but can no longer seem to find them. It was a classic feature that I found very charming.

In light of the propensity for many to say that "par does not matter"...I have always wondered why clubs like FH would have "par" rather than "yardage".

Brian, that was a great site (I was unaware of it until now).  We should do something similar here--I bet the members here have a ton of scorecards of the great courses.

I don't have one with me, but Copake's walking scorecard is wonderful, particularly because of its size.

Which is better: vertically- or horizontally-oriented scorecards? I prefer horizontal, but I think that's because it's what I'm used to.

The purists will roll their eyes, but I have a soft spot for those public course scorecards with ads for local businesses plastered all over the perimeter of them.

Classy Adrian ;)

but as 99% of the golfing world are using electronic gadgets to get their information. Giving them much more than this card does would probably end up with giving the golfer the same info twice. For those who do not use gadgets they probably like the minimalist approach so it might be a win-win for 100% of the golfing world and we would all be laughing ;D

Great idea, and I actually thought of doing just that (I noticed he was missing a few Ohio ones that I have), but I could not find an easy way (button, link, instructions) to submit one.  Perhaps I just overlooked it.

I have both Shoreacres and Old Elm.  I'd argue Shoreacres is slightly better, the Black Tee scorecard.  At Old Elm it's called the Buzz Tee.

I'll try to post tonight.

Swinley Forest. Legend has it they never even had a scorecard until relatively recently.

Its a sure bet that I will like a small (roughly 3x5 inches) plain white card with yardages from one tee only.  Local rules, stick map and stymie gauge on the front and back are optional.  I hate it when there are several yardages for each hole on a card.  Make that crap for visitors if must be, but keep the member card cheap and not so cheerful.
