The Shell's WWoG video from Mid-Ocean on youtube.com led me to a bunch of other golf videos from the 1960's. A number of them have been posted just recently.

The one you weren't sure of should have this link:

It's Royal Ottawa - I recognize the clubhouse.
With every golf development bubble, the end was unexpected and brutal....

Never saw the beginning of Nelson vs Littler at Pine Valley. The overheard shots are great. Thanks for posting David.

The 67 Piccadilly is a classic. never seen it before. Back when the golfers seemed to ooze class and Wentworth still had elements of heathland!!!!

Golf Channel is currently airing an episode of All Star Golf with Arnold Palmer and Frank Stanahan from Normandy Shores in Miami. The greens look to be rolling at about 3-4 on the stimp.

I thought those numbers would be popular with the GCA crowd.

Watched the whole Piccadilly with Arnie winning. He shot 70 and 67 in the final to beat Peter Thompson on the last, Great golf but in 1987 Tommy Nakajima shot 65 and 63 and lost to Sandy Lyle!!!! It was the year I finished working there on the maintenance team. People say that golf standards have improved beyond recognition but jeez, you shoot 16 under over 36 and still lose. :-\

I watched the Pine Valley episode last night.  Thanks for posting!
Some questions:
  • Who broadcast the series?
  • Did Shell have exclusive advertising rights?
  • What would that have cost to produce?  It looked like camera filmed from behind several tees on scaffolding.  That must have cost quite a bit to produce, given that they had a single group.
  • They seemed to have good luck following balls on the green and into the bunkers and trees.  Did they stage those scenes after the fact?
One other thing: it looked like Independence Hall has had some significant tree removal since that event!

Shell owned the series and bought the time on NBC.

There's a bunch of discussion on this event, I posted last year when it was on TV and got a lot of good responses to some of these same questions.

De Pan looks terrific. Didn't know it was an old Colt classic. Looks very much like Swinley Forest etc.

"back when golfers seemed to ooze class"

it was a different time, with different standards, and different ignorances.

How funny are Sarazen and Demaret? They make a smart pair, in their demeanor, dress and wit.

De Pan is spectacular. Can't get over how well Thompson recovered from rough, how manageable the green speeds were, and how much fun the course would be to play. Frank Pont had not yet been born!! Too bad his De Pan page is "under construction" here... http://www.infinitevarietygolf.com/portfolio.html#

Coming in 2024
~Elmira Country Club
~Soaring Eagles
~Bonavista
~Indian Hills
~Maybe some more!!

You'd have thought De Pan would be right up Thompson's street but clearly he had a rare off day. Delightful looking course. I'm guessing but I suspect Frank's focus will be on tree removal.....

The Palmer-Stranahan match was filmed in the spring of 1958 and aired on ABC on 11/1/1958.

Some of these - and other episodes not listed below but available via Youtube - were filmed on courses that these days are seemingly never heard of. I wonder how the courses were selected? Do the likes of Cotton Bay, Pauma Valley, Cherokee Plantation (Els/Duvall), Crosswater Club (Daly/Couples), still exit and if so under what name?

Thomas D. -

Except for Cotton Bay, but I believe the other courses you list are all alive and well under their own names. If you do a web search for each name, you will get an answer to you question. I played Pauma Valley myself a few years ago. A very nice "classic" Robert Trent Jones venue.

There are a number of the more recent version of SWWoG episodes available on youtube. Many were filmed on courses built in the last 20-30 years. I remember Fred Couples played Greg Norman on a very windy day at the Carnegie Club/Skibo Castle. My guess is the developers of newer courses saw the opportunity to host one of those episodes as a chance to promote their course.

This is the most comprehensive listing of SWWoG episodes that I have seen:

Golf Channel will be showing a 24+ hour block of SWWOG. Most just tell the players but St Andrews and Pine Valley are mid-day on 1 January.
