Askernish Trip
« on: October 03, 2016, 10:28:18 AM »
Prompted by Sean Arble saying that he wanted to get to Askernish but needed a kick up the bum to actually get him there, I was thinking about organising a trip up there next spring. Anyone interested, and what sort of dates would be preferred if so?

I'd certainly be keen on an Askernish trip.

May would seem a good month as historical weather statistics suggest that May is the the driest month of the year closely followed by April and June.

The temperatures seem okay at that time of year as well - https://www.yr.no/place/United_Kingdom/Scotland/Benbecula/statistics.html

I would be interested.  One of the May Bank Holiday weekends might work.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

The rough won't be so high in spring either  :)

You might want to try to discover when they remove the animals. It was mid May in 2015.

Adam,

Not sure what I'll be doing in May, but keep me informed of the plans as they emerge as it's a place I'd like to go.

I'd be interested, if around...

Been meaning to do a Glencruitten, Tobermory, Askernish, Benbecula, Isle of Harris, Gairloch loop for ages! It's pretty reasonable (160quid) on one of those Caledonia MacBrayne Island Hopscotch tickets.

How would people be most likely to get up there? If fly, at this rate we're going to fill the plane (they are 34 seat Saabs that fly to Benbecula). On the other hand, if there's more than nine of us wanting to fly, I can talk to Loganair and get a group price.

No, that's the Barra flight (the next island down). Can be done but you need to get a wee ferry across to Uist. And figure out how to get from Barra airport to the ferry terminal, and then from the other end to the golf course, or hotel.

Sounds like a triathlon is ahead for Sean  ;D

Being already up by Inverness I will probably drive and take the ferry.

I'm certainly up for it. Good on you for organising. Happy to fly or equally take the ferry and fit in a few other courses as Clyde suggests.

I haven't played Scarista (Harris), but I've been past and it is an amazingly beautiful spot.

Clyde, I think Ran might have just visited there...

I was at Askernish last May and whilst I was layered up with every warm item of clothing I had, epic doesn't do it justice.    Enjoy!!

If the stars align, I'd like to make this trip also. It's good to hope anyway.
