I sat in the Golf Channel truck for a while during Solheim Cup singles a few years ago. There had just been a shift change of directors, and I asked how they picked which match to show, given there are 12 on Sunday and all are important.
The answer: They picked four to concentrate on at the start and then picked up highlights from the others. There was no way to show every shot, because you would get so far behind – much TV golf is on delay anyway.
The same applies to 2 vs. 2 matches. Eventually, you have to choose what to show, not just show everything. Directors are editors as much as they are shot selectors.
The side-by-side works in auto racing, because the cars go round-and-round, but doesn't work in golf, in part because you don't see the ball well. Lack of replays of key moments also isn't there, but this is only the second time NBC has tried it.
The interviews (PGA president or whomever) don't last long, but it's amazing to see golf writers on Twitter get all bent out of shape about them. Maybe they should be on the course with the little radio you get at the Ryder Cup, and hoof it while listening to BBC.
