Second holes that return to the clubhouse
« on: September 06, 2016, 08:28:48 PM »
i just posted about a hole like this at La Cumbre in Santa Barbara.   The clubhouse is on a steep hill. The first hole is a 430 yard par 4 off that hill, the second returns to the clubhouse with an uphill approach to a two tier green right below the clubhouse.

This seems to be a recurring theme with Thomas.  Riviera's second comes back to the clubhouse.   There are some benefits:   Sudden death playoffs starting at #1 don't get far from the house.  The perennially late guy can join you on the third tee only 2 down.

Our second hole at Pensacola does this.    What other courses feature this returning second hole.  (I can't remember if Bel Air does, it's been too long, and I have no idea today what were the first two holes in the original Ojai routing!)

Bel Air does not return at #2 green, as there is only room for the 9th and 18th holes to come back up to the clubhouse in that space.  Gotta follow the canyons!

However, Thomas was a big proponent of coming back to the clubhouse with #2 in his book, for precisely the two reasons you stated above.  It was influential enough on me that High Pointe came back to the clubhouse at #2.  I can't think if I have ever done so again.

Rolling Green does that. Tonight I played the back, 3 and 4, and ended on 2.

The old Turnberry routing does this;not sure about the new routing. Also, Shady Oaks and Ridgewood in Waco do this. I think the New England club where they used to play a tour tourney(Pleasant Valley?) does this as well.

The 3rd hole at Columbus CC returns to the clubhouse (it was 18 in the original routing).

...and at Dunbar #3 green comes back to the clubhouse. In fact, it's closer to the clubhouse than the 18th green is.

The first two courses I ever played, both modest former farm nine-holers (Scott-View GC and Wemberley Hills GC)   each had a second hole returning to the clubhouse.  Perhaps archies John Kosydar and Joe Bosak, respectively, were also disciples of Captain Thomas?  ;)
