Columbia-Edgewater Renovations?
« on: September 27, 2003, 08:08:22 PM »
I'm watching the LPGA playing Columbia-Edgewater in Portland, and they're saying that C-E was redesigned/reworked a few years ago.

I used to play C-E when I lived in Portland (I was a member next door at Riverside), and I'm wondering if anybody here knows exactly what updates were made.  I always considered C-E to be an excellent course...

Thanks!

Dan,

The original layout is by Vernon Macan, circa 1920s. I recall hearing Arthur Hills' firm had orchestrated the most recent work on the course, there. Though, I have no idea what exactly was done.

Columbia Edgewater has had many changes over the years.  Bob Cupp did the ones before Arthur Hills.  I believe he did some of the changes you see to the 13th hole (par 3 over water) among others.  I haven't seen anything in the coverage that looks different from the last time I was there in 2000, but I guess Hills has done somethings there.

A year and a half ago Art Hills firm redid both the tournament #8 par three green and the #18 par four green. Both greens are essentially new designs.
The lakes bordering #18 and the one separating #8 and #10 were also overhauled. The railroad tie supports were removed and a more natural flow from fairway/green to the lakes was accomplished. The #10 fairway was also re-contoured and a number of trees were removed.
I believe on the telecast they said it was restored; it was far from a restoration! I do believe both #8 and #18 are now better holes though.
