Is #11 at Troon the most penal hole in the Open Rota?
« on: July 16, 2016, 01:07:26 PM »
If you replaced the gorse & the railway OB with water and moved the hole to Florida, would people use the dreaded "unfair" word to describe it? With water instead of gorse, if could fit right in at Doral or TPC Sawgrass. ;)

Not sure it's really an 'unfair' hole. 'Great' maybe?

As to switcharound comparisons, getting you're backside spiked by a gorse bush at TPC or have a train suddenly rumble by would be unexpected, but then again I guess you're not likely to meet an alligator on the west coast of Scotland. A few Bears maybe -  (sic - in joke) :) - by the way, are there more acknowledged Bears now that the Boys in Blue are back in the SPL?

I can only imagine how hard that hole would be in a left to right wind.

I see gorse as effectively water, certain lost ball, only you can't drop laterally.

An utter brute of a hole. Great to watch the pros play it though isn't' it? Did anyone see Bubba slice it OB yesterday?

Gorse is nothing like water. In water you don't have to find your ball to take a drop. Gorse are OB pockets. Less width...

Thinking back on the 1962 Open when Arnie won, wasn't 11 a par 5?

It was at some point previously. I think I heard them say it was changed to a 4 for the 1997 Open Championship.

I guess that made Jack Nicklaus's 10 a little less awful

Statistics back up it being the most penal. More "others" (triple +) than any other hole in the rota.
