I don't have a solution either but tv has too much influence on the outcome.

Open shaming, strenuous and sustained. Then mocking and sneering, with Matt Ginella starting a grading system and giving then "Fs"

Seems very hard to believe anyone would know they moved about 3 grains of sand.

I agree, this is a real tough situation for golf. It seems almost certain that other players in this tournament may have also happened to graze the ground in a bunker and been unaware of it and not incurred the penalty. The tax of being in contention.

Sorry, but...

So you remove "she knew"

Really Jim?

That's weaker than the USGA's ability to handle this

Statistics would suggest we cannot crown a winner because we don't really know what happened throughout the week.

As bad as it is to not know her name, the patronizing manner of saying "Come on up here" was even worse.

Yes Greg...about 30 seconds after posting It.

I decided taking a shot at this woman's character probably wasn't the best course of action.

She didn't seem too surprised by the effective end to the playoff when they told her what the video showed...

The entire organization has a huge black eye after these last two events and the public performance of Ms. Murphy.

Just sad to watch.

Congrats Bethany.

So you are assuming and putting it out for public consumption that she cheated?

Shame on you.

I'm sure you are embarrassed at your post but it deserves further light. Shame on you.

An opposite view......   I'm a mediocre player who enjoys tournament golf and is well versed in the rules.  From any bunker, I employ a different takeaway than I do for any other shot.  No grounding, and a much steeper backswing.  That makes the shot more challenging, but eliminates any possibility of grounding or "sweeping" of the sand.  Anna took her normal swing, from which she obtained an advantage, but which violated the rules.

Bottom line, I think this was very unfortunate, but the right call.  The only question mark in my mind is the timing of notification.

It wasn't fair to inform Nordqvist after her third shot but Lang before hers.  Lang changed clubs after getting the news!

The USGA should be ashamed of their awful handling of the situation but, even more so, of the embarrassing presentations at both of their opens.  Seriously, it's amazing that Mrs. Murphy is the face of the organization.

Given the evidence THAT CALL IS EASY but what about the 1000 other bunker shots that did not receive such scrutiny?

So we have a true champion?

Greg.

We may have different opinions on this but save the drama for someone else.

If an official tells me I've broken a rule I have no idea I've broken and it effectively kills this US Open for me, I'll have a much different reaction than..."OK".

She didn't intentionally touch the sand, but she knew she did after the fact.

Once again you openly accuse her of cheating based on a reaction after the fact that essentially sealed the deal.

Well done, at least you own up to it.

Wade...  I'm inclined to agree with you on both counts.

Jim....  I suspect she knew that she took no extraordinary precautions to avoid grounding, thus knew it was possible.  Not cheating, but hoping she could make a normal swing with no violation?  Certainly in other situations she's hit shots with a steeper than normal takeaway but chose not to here.

Hey Genius, what exactly did you think I meant in my edited post? You called me out for something Einstein, what was it?

I thought it best for her to not have my opinion blasted across the interweb...you obviously have no such tact.
