Sorry, never had a Garmin and didn't have a smart phone when I went. Printed out a bunch of Google Maps ahead of time and marked them up with sharpie pens so I could read the essentials while I drove.

On a trip to Northern Island that includes Royal County Down, Portrush and Portstewart what is the consensus on the additional courses at each location? Are Annesley at County Down, Valley at Portrush, and Old Course and Riverside at Portstewart all worthy of a play?

Tim,

Valley Course at Portrush is very good. Castlerock is nearby and also very good.

I have heard good things about Ardglass, north of RCD, but have not played it.

Riverside is the one you most certainly want to leave out.

Soft and wet for the most part.

Ardglass would be slightly north and some east of RCD. Dick Daily swears by it. Especially if you stay at the captain's AirBnB and he invites you to play. ;)

I have heard good things about Ballycastle east of Portrush.

If I remember correctly, Jeff Warne swears by Greencastle 26 miles west of Portrush, just across the ferry in Ireland.

Castlerock is a nice links, but a little too narrow for my tastes. That goes for its second course too.

Yes, you are right about Ardglass. My mistake.

I played Ballycastle as part of the Bushmill's Causeway Coast tournament in June, 1994. The 4-round tournament was played over Portstewart, Castlerock, Portrush Valley & Ballycastle.


Ballycastle was clearly the weakest of the 4 courses. It was a combination of links, pastureland and cliff-top golf. I believe the course has been altered since then, so maybe it is better than it used to be.

If you want to venture inland, I have heard good things about Royal Belfast. I have not played it.

The Annesley at RCD is certainly worth playing, surprisingly good.
For 9-holes play The Bann 9-holer at Castlerock. Bit good it is.


Both the above courses have had GCA photo tours done. Check the search engine.

Played Portstewart and Castlerock in N. Ireland nine years ago in addition to County Sligo, Donegal, Rosapenna and Ballyliffin in the Republic of Ireland. The front nine played in the dunes of Portstewart is world class fun. I thought Castlerock was a nice amalgamation of what one expects when playing links golf. Tall dunes, ocean views, Church Steeple and a train bordering the fairway. Castlerock had all of these features. Wish we could have played Portrush but they were hosting an amateur tournament the time we were there.

Not knowing your definition of "worthy of a play", I will just say that Valley is much better than old at Port Stewart.
