Today's apartments are all about stainless appliances and laminate flooring.  The days of avocado appliances, shag carpet and mansard roofs are long gone.  This raises a few questions:

Stylistically, is The Ocean Course obsolete?

Stated otherwise, what if the Dyes build it today?  Would the rough be fairway and the sand hazards more rugged?

Would it avoid being passed in the rankings?

Would it make any difference?

Could the same be said of TPC - Sawgrass?

Has the student become the master?

Bogey,
It's an interesting question but like anything, style is a preference and it also comes and goes.  I personally think the Ocean Course is stylistically perfect.  I love the hard edges and lines of Dye's style, yet I also think the holes themselves are very natural looking and lay upon the land very easily.

I honestly think if it was done in the newer (older?) style and very rugged, it wouldn't stand apart as much.

MH,
As I mentioned in your bunker thread....it's all about the hairstyle....and they change...doesn't mean you have to change the course...IMHO...
I think you would be the same hillbilly even without the tattoos , mullet and earring you wear....put a clean shave and closely cropped hair on you and you would still be the same dude...

Michael,

You're a rater and raters tell us what's good. Who tells the raters? As long as Dye is alive Brad Klein will make sure his legions pay homage. The old man deserves it afterall. I mean what are you going to do, promote another Fazio?

Mike - when we were in our late teens my friends and I used to laugh derisively at those ads from the 1950s of the housewife in high heels proudly showing off her new self cleaning oven -- a dupe of  the madison avenue pitchmen we thought, and a fool who believed that the latest gadget would make her life happy. Jump ahead 30 years and there is hardly a person I know who is not on their 5th laptop, 6th I-phone, 2nd house, 4th car, and 3rd kitchen, this time in stainless steel of course. The biggest dupes are the ones who think they are too sophisticated to be duped, and who believe they are beyond/above trying to keep up with the Jones.

Like everyone says, styles come and go...and then come back again. People 50 years from now will have a much better perspective on it all.
If anything, I would say The Ocean Course is more highly regarded today than it was when it opened.
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

If I opined that Brora is every bit the equal of The Ocean Course would you consider me to be:

a)  Nuts
b)  Biased against modern design
c)   Thoughtful
d)   A narrow-minded high handicapper oblivious to the rigors of championship golf
e)  To focused on form over substance

Yes

but I agree
