From the routing in Dr. B's links there seems to be extra holes??

Their Militia Hill course abuts the Wissahickon.

Got it - since there was another clubhouse I assumed that Militia Hill was not located next to the Wissahickon couse.

Is it me or is the course quite sterile and textureless looking on TV?

Jeff:. I only got to see about half an hour of coverage Friday to Sunday.  But that is a half hour more than I would have otherwised watched because I am a complete Keith Foster mark.

From TV, it seemed the greens rolled really nice as, as should be expected with almost brand new grass.  The wind was up, and many of the pins were in the front, but everyone tried to fly it in there, but those old greens had that big ditch in front that made the low pitch so tempting to this high handicapper.

That golf course, with slower greens and shorter, is the course I could play everyday until I cannot walk anymore.
The only way of really finding out a man's true character is to play golf with him. In no other walk of life does the cloven hoof so quickly display itself.

While TV certainly tends to flatten and mute the contours and textures of a golf course, I thought the course looked spectacular.

Maybe it's because I'm familiar with it and I was "seeing" things only because I know they are there. But I'm curious to hear whether others share Jeff's view.

Player comments on the course:

Tom Watson:
"It's a Tillinghast golf course. I've played a lot of Tillinghast golf courses and they are difficult," Watson said. "You really have to hit a lot of quality shots. The greens are very quick and, with this northwest wind, it played very tough today. This golf course is all you want. That's the absolute best I could do. It's a championship golf course. You could hold any type of championship tournament on this course you'd want, I think."

I had the pleasure of playing The Cricket course just prior to tree removal #1.  My host and I bantered for 4 hours about many of the shots that were required to be played, as over the years, many ornamental & flowering trees had been planted in areas just outside the line of play. The trees had matured and left no way to recover from a shot just left or right of an intended target other than crawling in and under the hanging branches and punching out or trying to run the ball through a sand trap and onto the green.

I walked/road the Cricket course after the tree work and could immediately appreciate the difference.

A tremendous exercise for this group would be to play Old Oaks in Purchase, NY on day #1 of a 2 day Tilly Adventure and play Cricket on day 2.  The sites are not dissimilar, and done by the same DOG.  However, on my last visit to Old Oaks, they had not done significant tree removal. Having seen what transpired at the Cricket course, I could only hope the OLD Oaks members would undertake some pruning or an ice storm would come by in winter and assist the superintendent with his selective pruning.

My favorite quote from Logan's piece:

Bob Friend:
"14th at Philadelphia Cricket Club is a 122-yard par three and it's brilliant. Every course should have a tiny one-shotter."

Amen, i watched Bart Bryant, who was leading on Saturday, make a mess of it. Presumably, he was standing on the tee licking his chops thinking "birdie".

That hole (the 3rd, for member play) is an utter gem, and one of my favorite short par-3s:

Ticket is under Mike Blake-golf club atlas, if anyone wants it.

Mike

Wish I'd seen the in time . Nice gesture on your part none the less ! I hope someone took you up on it .

Mayday

Thanks for the explanation But really the Carolinas ? I won't lie that saddens me a bit but again I have not seen it since all the trees were axed. Neutered is a good word let me ask you this you say the trees that were there to YOUR eye helped you shape your shots would you say since this is no longer the case did it in your opinion make the course harder ?

seeing that picture of the 3rd hole (14th for the tourn)
Langer made an incredible pitch from over that green to save par, that shot in my opinion won him the tournament.

the green seemed almost unfair in that the firmness seemed to not be consistent.
all shots that hit the center of the green checked up and left a longish putt to the back hole location.
But Langer flew his shot back to the rear third of the green and it landed like concrete and bounded off the back.

maybe he caught his shot slightly thin, i don't know?
either way, he still made an incredible soft pitch from over that green.
