Course to play in Houston
« on: September 25, 2003, 04:49:22 AM »
I'm leaving for Houston on business next Wed. The following Monday I have free for golf. I'm staying at the Woodlands Marriott Waterway. ( Have no real desire to play any of the Woodlands courses ) I'm flying out of Houston Hobby at 6:00 PM that Monday evening. For those of you familiar with Houston, what course would you suggest I play that would best embody the spirit of GCA?--------------------Thanks in advance!

Andy,

Magnolia Creek is in League City, no more than 30 minutes south on I-45 from Hobby.  Traffic-wise, I think playing south is your best bet.

Private:  Carlton Woods (Nicklaus) in the Woodlands.

Public:  Memorial west of downtown; Cypresswood (3 courses) far north.

Eric may be right about heading south if you are flying out of Hobby...and Mag Creek is a good choice.

Lou is right about Carlton Woods...but it is very exclusive.

I would recommend the Gary Player course in the Woodlands. When I first played it, I truly hated it. After playing it a few more times, my opinion has reversed field...I'm not sure if it is a great track, but it is interesting, especially the green sites. It has a great variety of holes, and its in the neighborhood.

Steve Elkington built a nice course in the Woodlands area called Fish Creek. Twenty minutes away from your hotel, a real good public course, esp. their original eighteen.

If the choice is Cypresswood, the Tradition course is the one to play. But I'd advise the conditions the last time I played there were way less than ideal.

If I weren't working Monday, I'd try to join you. Enjoy your time here.

Andy,

I don't know what it is about the Woodlands you do not like and I've never been there, but I do know that by excluding it you are missing out on the chance to play with the Langs one of the nicest couples you'll ever meet and some fine golfers at that.

Andy,

Carlton Woods is a great layout.  I belong to Champions and it is also a good traditional layout.  Let me know if you need help arrainging a game.

I concur with Eric - Magnolia Creek - it's near Hobby and has 27 good holes.
I also concur with Craig - The Langs are a hell of a pair.
I also concur with David - The Cypress course is my favorite in town.  Maybe David will join me one day when I'm out there.  Please send me a message if your interested David.

You've gotten some very sound advice.
If Blaketree National weren't closed on mondays that would be my choice (without gaining access to Cypress).
I'd like to join you Mr. Silis, but after NM, I'm a bit behind.

Cheers

Mike,

Anytime that you would like to play, I will see if my schedule will allow.

Andy,

While you don't want to play them, if you want to tour the Oaks, Panther Trail, The TPC, the Palmer's 27 holes, or the Player course let me know.  I have no easy entre' to Carlton Woods and have only played it once since it opened, but you're not really missing a lot there other than the clubhouse.

I concur that if Blaketree National was available Mondays you'd really have to go for it..  The Cypresswood Tradition is stressed but still worth a look,  Elkington's Fish Creek's old back 9 and newer 9 are much fun, as is Ogrin's High Meadow Ranch with 3, 6-hole loops.. you could do those both as they're relatively close, but might mentally strain to get your flight by fighting rush hour traffic gioing south through downtown.

I'd take off work in a heartbeat to get on Champions after walking it several times during Tour Championships. Never played it.

I've played a lot at Magnolia Creek and Timber Creek and prefer the greens at the former and setting at the latter.. not sure how much those courses really "embody the spirit of gca," (Magnolia is all artificially pushed up and quite hyped) but they're certainly fun and timewise unbeatable as they'll let you get to Hobby very quickly in PM.

Perhaps a warmup at the front 9 at Memorial Park followed by 18-27 at Magnolia would be sufficient exposure to mid 80's temps and humidity.. the 5-6-7 stretch at Memorial is great bunch of holes..

Thanks to all for your advice and suggestions! I'm on the road in Phoenix. ( played Las Sendas yesterday--145 Slope from the back!------Hard, hard, hard!!!!You really have to know exactly where to drive it with some blind tee shots and some very small undulating greens. Not really close to the top of my favorites out here, but it was a challenging experience nonetheless! ) I didn't mean to impugn the Woodlands. Have played there before: Tournament Course as well as Panther Trail. Was looking for something different! I've been rolling the rock pretty good lately so I might have to give Magnolia a try. Thanks for the advice regarding traffic flow. I hate rushing to try to make a flight!-----As always, the GCA Community is THE BEST!!!!!!!!

Best Regards,

Andy - your biggest concern should be the commute from the Woodlands to Hobby.  Without traffic, which doesn't exist in Houston (the largest city in the world completely devoid of mass transit - and thinks they don't need it), it will take at best an hour.  Anytime after 3:30 it could honestly take over 2 hours.  Safe bet is to get on the south side of Houston first and play your golf there.

I've heard some good things about Wildcat Golf Club.  It' s a couple miles south of Reliant Stadium, so you're real close to Hobby.  I know the course has a website so you can check it out.
