The Findlay Cup

May 14 and 15, 2016
The Findlay Cup honors Alexander H. Findlay, the father of American golf, who designed the 18-hole course at Reading Country Club and the original 9-hole course at Galen Hall Golf Club.
The competition is open to all golfers with a USGA handicap. To enter, complete the form below or call the RCC pro shop at 610-779-1626 or the GHGC pro shop at 610-678-5424.
Format: This is a best-ball-of-partners tournament. Players select their partner; the players do not need to be members of either RCC or GHGC.
  • May 14 – Play is at Galen Hall Golf Club, Wernersville, PA
  • May 15 – Play is at Reading Country Club, Reading, PA
  • Entry fee: $85 for RCC and GHGC members, $110 for non-members; includes golf, carts, prize pool and range balls.

Indeed they are fun to play. I'm stuck in the desert now but this a good opportunity to play 2 historical courses.


Here is Tillinghast's "Moat Hole" at Galen Hall:





And a little history at Reading:
In 1937, Byron Nelson was hired as the club's golf professional. He arrived at Reading Country Club in 1937 right after winning the Masters.   He told a fellow professional that he used his $1,500 first place check from the Masters to stock the pro shop. That summer he finished 20th in the U.S. Open and played on the first Ryder Cup Team to win on British soil. While in England he finished 5th in the British Open.
Later that year he won $3,000, the largest first prize on the PGA Tour, by beating Henry Picard in the finals of the Belmont Match Play in Massachusetts.  He won twice on the PGA Tour in 1938.  In June 1939 he won the U.S. Open at the Philadelphia Country Club's Spring Mill Course by defeating Craig Wood and Denny Shute in a three-way play-off.  That year he also won the Western Open, the North and South Open, and was runner-up in the PGA Championship.  Nelson resigned his position at RCC in late 1939 to become the professional at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Two really interesting courses and good fun to boot.   Price is right, as well.   Thanks for alerting everyone, Steve.

From a historical perspective, I'm not sure how much of Findlay still exists at Galen Hall, but the course (and some of Tillinghast's changes) are wonderful.

Only a small timer wouldn't have a backup Gulfstream.
