Pine Valley postcards/B&W aerial Dates?
« on: March 28, 2016, 09:23:06 AM »
To All:

A recent (partial) search of the Hurdzan Collection came up with an envelope of Pine Valley postcards.  All 18 holes are featured with examples below.  The graphic design suggests post war possible 1960s, but there is no dating on the cards.  Same for a B&W aerial of the course from a separate part of the collection.

I'd be happy for any thought s regarding the specific dates of the pc's and aerial.

Thanks.
Tony

I would guess the postcards are from sometime in the early 1970's, or maybe the late 60's.  They were still selling them when I first visited the club in 1980.

Thanks Tom.

My thoughts too: 1960s thru early '70s.  Your 1980 date for seeing them at the club gives us an outside date.

I have a complete set of postcards, which was included in "The Short History of Pine Valley", an undated book put out by the club.
The book references the SWWG match, and the last year mentioned in the book was 1957.

Edit: An Amazon search shows my book cover from 1974, but a 1968 printing by John H Brown exists.

I have a set of those too.  Pretty cool pieces that show how rugged and unmaintained the waste areas used to be!

Pete:  So far 1957 thru 1974?  Works for both your book cover date and Tom's comments.

Anyone have a date thought on the B&W aerial?  The practice range is in place, so for someone who knows that date it would give a baseline.

Thanks to all.

 8) ???

Wow , great looking stuff. Won't be the first or last time if I'm wrong , but my spider sense says '65 to '70.

My first look was 1975, when Eb Steiniger was superintendent , so the rough and tumble foliage and trees inside the bunker was a constant  . It wasn't til Dick Bator arrived when it got cleaned up a lot. However , the yardage listed at 217-226 (front ) could be telling. Remember , I'm old enough  to have watched Columbo !  Trying to ascertain if they changed scorecards, if that's available anywhere, might be a clue.

Good stuff

Anthony,

I would estimate the B&W aerial to be between the years 1951 and 1957.

If you look on historicaerials.com and focus specifically on the practice range, you can see the changes between 1951-1957  The practice range pictured in the aerial you posted looks similar in size and shape to the practice range seen on the 1957 aerial.  However, in the 1957 aerial you can see a road or trail running below the range, which does not exist on the aerial you posted.

The 1951 aerial shows no road or trail similar to your aerial, but the land cleared for the range has yet to take the shape we see in the aerial you posted.

Outside of that, I have no knowledge of when the range opened, but I thought I could help you narrow it down.

Thanks Bret:

That's close enough for my purposes.  I'd like to give Mike H a best guess (for his records) on both the postcards and the B&W aerial.  But for me I wanted to confirm they both are post WWII, as I thought on first seeing them.  The group has essentially confirmed this.

Thanks again to all.
