Name that course in British Pathé video
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:30:48 AM »
Hello Discussion Group,

A lurker for a few years, I have been permitted to pose a question concerning my plan to set a story on a golf course.

Can someone identify the course depicted in this British Pathé video, circa1960, entitled “Boy Golfer”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EshlhAHVhS4

I was unable to enable sound, so could not solve the mystery that way.

Identification of the people would be an unanticipated bonus.

The story would be posted at my online writing project called New Monuments Golf Club:

Many thanks in advance.

Greg,

This might help. Google: Boy Golfer 1960 Pathe

It appears to be Bournemouth in Dorset.

Nearly there, Neil, but the text does not name the specific course in Bournemouth. Someone familiar with the area may be able to identify it.

Thanks for narrowing the field. And bonus points for enabling me to make the acquaintance of the McConnells. Perhaps that person with local knowledge will recognize other individuals too.

The YouTube version of the video, incidentally, is a bit longer.

I looked for the clubhouse and 270-yard 7th hole on Bournemouth golf websites - without success.

Looking at where clubhouse is could it be Queens Park. The 7th is a 170 par three I think but some holes were shortened because or there proximity to a road.

Paul that was my thinking.   I've played Queens Park but only visited Meyrick Park. The latter has a par 3 in front of the current clubhouse which crosses a huge valley.

Queens Park is more interesting than those  photo's. Outsandng VFM with some lovely holes. I understand the first 3 or 4 were all shortened to take driver out of play and to pacify the neighbours.
Let's make GCA grate again!

I've only played there once but totally agree it has some very good holes. I remember a couple of par 5s especially.

Bournemouth has two courses named Queen's Park. Which one do you have in mind? If you aren't sure it's the one in the video, I can contact both QPs (and Meyrick Park).

Yes, I am sure one is the golf club playing over the muni and the other is the muni course.

Is Meyrick Park worth a go?  Are the trees a huge issue for playability?  Is the lodge any good?
