Pine Valley
Merion
Winged Foot West & East
Bethpage Black
Ganton
Sunningdale Old & New
Walton Heath Old & New


I would say anyone should say yes to an invite to any of those. As others commented though, this is a very eclectic list.

UK related, and not specific course names, but rather some factors that either individually or in combination would encourage further investigation or a visit -
A) Is it built on free draining land?
B) Was it designed by Colt, MacKenzie, Braid, Fowler, other architect of interest?
C) Does the course hold Open Competitions (or accept County Cards)?

Elgin - excellent course. Has a heathland feel to it even though they have planted to many saplings in places. From memory its a par 68 or 69 but don't let that fool you, there are something like 10 or 11 holes over 400 yards and only one of them is a par 5. Don't think that makes it a slog, its not. It has some interesting green complexes without being crazy. When I lived in Elgin I seriously considered joining Elgin ahead of Moray with its two links courses, it was that good.


In a Scottish context I'd say it is better than Rosemount. Hard to compare it to the Gleneagles courses which are at a different scale but I'd be surprised if you didn't enjoy Elgin.

+1 Sean, FWIW I would also agree with Michael. Great course, not extreme at all. You would love it, I'm sure of it.


...but then again, didn't you say Roaring Gap was an impossible walk? Perhaps you are getting a lot older than the last time I saw you  ;D

thanks for giving Sean a good description of Elgin. I played it for the first time in 30 years last year and was really impressed. It is one of those courses that has a lot of mid and long iron approaches on the par fours but never feels like a slog.
