Which inland courses would you include as part of a small handful of the most highly recommended?

It depends what you are looking for and what budget you have. Maybe a little guidance would be good Sean.

Just your blanket recommendations without a specific target or sample pool.

Among those I have played:

Pine Valley
Merion
Winged Foot West & East
Bethpage Black
Ganton
Sunningdale Old & New
Walton Heath Old & New

I would say anyone should say yes to an invite to any of those. As others commented though, this is a very eclectic list.

This is great - I know a guy who knows a guy at one of these, and in fact I know where the guy I know actually lives...Arbs, if you can get yourself to Detroit, I'll meet you at daybreak and take us from there...

We'll have to stop first in the home town* of the guy I know (since I know where he lives), and hopefully he'll remember that I know that he knows a guy up there, and then it will be easy sailing, relatively speaking...

*I shouldn't tell you the name of his home town (because then you'll know who I know, and everyone will too), but a hint: it has been, since the early 1900s, the home of one of the most prestigious publishers of theological/biblical books in the world

OK, on edit, inland is a large topic.  What gives?

UK related, and not specific course names, but rather some factors that either individually or in combination would encourage further investigation or a visit -
A) Is it built on free draining land?
B) Was it designed by Colt, MacKenzie, Braid, Fowler, other architect of interest?
C) Does the course hold Open Competitions (or accept County Cards)?

In pix Kingsley looks to be rather more extreme than I am prone to enjoy.  Knowing what little you do, do you think I would kick out of the course?

Jon - Elgin?  Talk to me.

Richard

Elgin - excellent course. Has a heathland feel to it even though they have planted to many saplings in places. From memory its a par 68 or 69 but don't let that fool you, there are something like 10 or 11 holes over 400 yards and only one of them is a par 5. Don't think that makes it a slog, its not. It has some interesting green complexes without being crazy. When I lived in Elgin I seriously considered joining Elgin ahead of Moray with its two links courses, it was that good.

In a Scottish context I'd say it is better than Rosemount. Hard to compare it to the Gleneagles courses which are at a different scale but I'd be surprised if you didn't enjoy Elgin.

Sean - Kingsley is one of my very favorite places to play... maybe top 5... definitely top 10. You would love it, I think.

+1 Sean, FWIW I would also agree with Michael. Great course, not extreme at all. You would love it, I'm sure of it.

...but then again, didn't you say Roaring Gap was an impossible walk? Perhaps you are getting a lot older than the last time I saw you  ;D

Sean,

wot he said :D

Niall,

thanks for giving Sean a good description of Elgin. I played it for the first time in 30 years last year and was really impressed. It is one of those courses that has a lot of mid and long iron approaches on the par fours but never feels like a slog.
