The second portion of my teaching sabbatical begins soon and I've reserved a few days for golf (to break up the school-visit routine.) I'll be golfing near Charlotte (Tega Cay and Ballentyne) on January 30/31, in Pinehurst (probably Southern Pines) on February 2nd and Caledonia on February 6. As of now, I'm a single on those four dates, and welcome any old/new friends.

This isn't a thread in the traditional sense, so what I hope to do is watch it drop to the bottom of the front page (at which time I'll bump it to the top again) as it is read, but not responded to. Instead, if you have interest in meeting up, Personal Message (PM) me here and we can continue the conversation that way.

Not sure what I'll find at the Charlotte courses in the way of gca, which is what makes those rounds interesting. I've seen Southern Pines before and welcome a chance to play it again. I've played True Blue but not Caledonia, and love Mike Strantz courses (even Stonehouse!) so I'm looking forward to this one.

Carolinas Schedule to date:

1.30.2016     Ballantyne in Charlotte
1.31.2016     Tega Cay in South Carolina (near Charlotte) with Bob Montle
2.02.2016     36 Holes!  Dormie (8 am) and Southern Pines (12:30) in Pinehurst with Jay Mickle
2.06.2016     Caledonia in South Myrtle
2.08.2016     Wild Dunes Harbor (8:30 am) and Links at Stono Ferry (1 pm) both near Charleston.

At least two spots are certainly available for interested GCA brethren at the first two, and three spots for the next three. PM me if interested. Someone once told me I was one of the least-liked members of GCA, so if you are one of those people, you can bring along a cream pie to throw in my face (and video it, and post it!)

PM me if interested in teeing it up.

I'm bumping this thread back to the top to see if any guys/gals in the Charlotte, central N.C., Myrtle or Charleston areas are interested in a go at any of the following courses. An old college chum of mine (Dr. Beast) may be joining me at the first two venues, so we would only have two slots at Ballantyne and one at Tega Cay. You don't have to commit to both rounds on February 2nd, but you are certainly welcome. FWIW, I've met Cory once and will shake Jay's hand for the first time (I hope) so this is pure GCA How Do You Do? Send a PM to me if interested.

1.30.2016     Ballantyne in Charlotte with Dr. Beast
1.31.2016     Tega Cay in South Carolina (near Charlotte) w/ Bob Montle, Dr. Beast

2.02.2016     36 Holes!  Dormie (8 am) and Southern Pines (12:30) w/ Jay Mickle
2.06.2016     Caledonia (12:30) in South Myrtle
2.08.2016     Wild Dunes Harbor (8:30 am) and Links at Stono Ferry (1 pm) both near Charleston.

Ron,
Haven't touched my clubs since October, but happy to walk along if the course allows or join you for dinner if you don't have other plans on 1/31. Check PM.

Ron,

Not sure of your exact plans, but Wild Dunes wouldn't be my first (or even fifth) recommendation in Charleston. If you're going to pay $150 for the Links you might as well spend a little extra and go out and see/play the Ocean Course at Kiawah. If you have any extra time for another few holes in Charleston, you should check out the Charleston Muni. It's an inexpensive ($18-20) course that supposedly was designed with the help of Raynor. It's a cool little course with a few terrific holes (12, for example, is awesome).

Have fun.

Thanks for the suggestions, Pat.

I've added the Harbor course at Wild Dunes in the AM, so more options for meet and greet that day.

I wish I could, Lyndell. There's that access problem that I don't wish to burden anyone with. I'll have to make due with vicarious visits to threads such as this one: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,43807.msg950951.html#msg950951

First round in the books. Ballantyne Resort course in Charlotte. Wedged between office buildings, a highway loop, a hotel and condos, not one hole was boring and the greens were wildly unpredictable. Anyone who poo-poos Ballantyne is myopic.

Ron,
Thanks for the invite to Tega Cay.   I had a great day, loved the course, and enjoyed playing with you and Steve.
I couldn't ask for a nicer golf partner than I had with you today.

Cheers,
Bob

Very kind of you, Bob. I enjoyed the round as well, despite the threat of impending death after the mighty 3-metal on the 16th hole. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

I cannot say that I've enjoyed golf as much as I did today, when I spent 32 holes with Jay Mickle at Dormie and Southern Pines. His Elusiveness might have joined us, if we had given him more lead time (evidently, this thread wasn't enough) but Jay more than carried the show. He arrived at Dormie and let me know that he had fallen the day before, was in pain, and was ready to go. Utilizing a manufactured, constricted, truncated swing, he more than held his own as we moved around the convoluted Dormie routing.

My previous go-round at the course was cut short due to snow (no marriage proposals that day, much to Kevin Lynch's relief.) As a result, I hadn't seen The Loop, the portion of the course from the 10th to the 13th. I also hadn't seen this fantastic sign, which I preserved for my golden years.

I enjoyed The Loop, I enjoyed Jay's informed narrative of how each hole plays, both properly and improperly, and I feared that we might be done. To my relief, Jay was in for another 18 at SoPines, and off we went, speed-limiting our way across the sand hills. We enjoyed a bit of sustenance from the transitional menu, but our late arrival meant that Jay would cut the round short, out of deference to an arrange dinner up the road a piece.

Our 14 holes were punctuated by a settling reminder of the kindness of golfers: the group two ahead of ours happened upon a goose (the kind who normally sh#t up the course) with a fishing hook and lure stuck through its wing and bill. The fellows waived other groups through as the calmed the bird and waited for a veterinarian to arrive.

If you're in the Pinehurst area, you'll regret not going around with Jay Mickle. Whether it's Whispering Woods or one of the area's known courses, your gallop with the Jersey native will be well-paced and worth the effort.

You should skip the round at the non-Links Wild Dunes course and go see the Muni instead. Especially if you're writing an article about under the radar, affordable golf courses.

South Carolina will be remembered as the shipwreck of broken dreams.

Was supposed to play two courses near Charleston today, but rains killed that plan. One of the courses has a shotgun tomorrow, and they've told me I cannot play (although I don't understand that part, as it should just be a morning shotgun.) Anyway, I'll try to get on the other one early and gain a moral victory.

Tuesday and Wednesday are school visits (part of my teaching sabbatical) so I wasn't scheduled to golf. Then, it's off to Florida for a few days, before a mad dash back north. An MD buddy of mine lives in Greenville now, so I will make it back your way, I promise.

Nope. Not terrible. Not by a long shot. Very wet, but Charleston has been soaked over the last 4 months. It was not the typical Ron Garl I'm used to; I usually find more nuance and a bit of trickery in his layouts. This one will take a bit of thought, regarding redeeming qualities and missed opportunities (the same replay I make for all courses I see.)

I've thought Ballantyne Resort course to be the best daily fee in the Charlotte area, and much better than the nearby private Ballantyne Country Club.  Who designed these two courses?  Hint.  Resort by an amateur,
