Wasn't the 4th originally a Biarritz left somewhat in tact by Rees Jones?  Would have been nice to leave an homage to Raynor, not unlike the Mackenzie Bunker at Augusta's 10th.

While I have never played an authentic/classic Biarritz (Yale, Fox Hollow, etc.), I did play the Dunes in late March, shortly before the course was closed for the current renovation.

I would say any relation between the 4th hole as it last was and an authentic/classic Biarritz was marginal at best.

I agree, David and I suppose squaring off that green would have made it stand out like a sore thumb - not to mention the upslope in front of the green combined with the prevailing soft conditions and downhill nature of the tee shot would thwart the intent of such a hole.  It's just such a perfect yardage from the back in today's world for such a hole.
 
I'd sure like to see a photo of Raynor's original.
 
I do like the new look, though I know Uncle Bob liked Rees' work quite a bit.

The back nine has a lot of the Cypress Point look with those dunes.   And deer!

The 18th is a dead ringer for 18 at Bandon Trails.   Drive into the saddle, uphill approach.

I'm a big fan of the Hunter/MacKenzie styled bunkers.
 
The routing remains the same with the 10th green being relocated closer to the ocean.

The 18th is a dead ringer for 18 at Bandon Trails.   Drive into the saddle, uphill approach.\

The drive on 18 at BT is much more than that. Every drive on that hole ends up much farther left than appears from the tee. Balls hit to the center of the fairway make the left drop-off; balls hit slightly left end up lost to humanity. It's a tough drive!!

If I had been aware of the dastardly hidden creek behind the 17th green I might have had 77, my best score in ages!


As Bob Huntley pointed out (without a trace of irony), I walked right past that creek on my way from the third green to the fourth tee!

The 17th green is so well guarded at the flanks and I doubt that those going long number more than a few.
The approach is fairly long and uphill which adds to the degree of difficulty.

That really is a terrific hole.

That also lends itself to that which I stated in another thread about course management and one's powers of observation.

You have to look at all of the greens/surrounds and holes that come into view as you play the course.

That's a hole I wouldn't want to have to make a par on in order to qualify for anything.

I had just birdied 16, missed the 17th fairway by a foot and could just hack out across the fairway.  Left with 110 yards I decided to play one more club from light rough to avoid the front bunkers.  Caught a flyer, boom, into that creek. Drop, chip, two putts, that's how triples occur even when you are playing pretty well.  🙄
