SHELLS........
« on: December 25, 2015, 09:21:15 AM »
In our modern day PC world.....HAPPY HOLIDAYS. Watching Shells WWG from Royal Melbourne....how great a world did we used to live in?

The courses didn't have to be "pure" for everyone to be happy, 4 irons went 175 yards and the crowd dressed in suits with ties.

Just a thought

Golf wasn't cool.
Courses weren't sanitized.
Man what a gift this Shell marathon is/was.
Embarrassed to say how many of these I watched.
fantastic stuff.

Random thoughts.

4 woods and 1 irons.
467 yard par 5's.
Sidehill lies mattered even at the best of courses because the fairways didn't stimp at 9 so the ball didn't always reach a relatively flat spot.
Hazards were hazards, but the best (Gary Player)still could distinguish themselves.
Pins were cut on and into slopes.
Fairway height much higher, and lies in fairway more random (a "tight" lie in the fairwway was commentworthy)
Misshitt putts didn't go in like they do on greens running 13.
Love the broken ground often played over and surrounding greens.
Texture everywhere.
Weeds abound in the rough, but often dirt/sandy.

Courses blend into the landscape SOOO much better.
Drought conditions reflected both OFF and on the course.
Conversely, TOC appears quite lush and green (obviously a wet spell) My wife, who was there at The Open this year, commented on how long the fairway grass was in the Sarazen/Cotton match.
Imagine that, a fairway(when weather dictates) that provides a cushion for the average player and requires some flier judgement for the expert.Or even provides the random cuppy or tight lie.

When did golf lose its way as an outdoor game ::) ::) ::) ?

Well anyone watching right now has the answer to my last question....
Just about threw up in my mouth watching the stripiness of Cordillera vs the last 5-6 shows.
Of course that was about 20 years ago so the fairway heights are probably 1/2 that now......

From Pine Valley to Cordillera was quite a shock, lasted about three holes....

How about driver, 5 iron into the first at St Andrews-albeit cold and breezy? That was talent.
