I just got my copy yesterday, and just like the first, what a wonderful diverse view of Golf Architecture from our time. It should be one of those things that lasts MORE Then a lifetime!

Great pieces by all, especially Todd Eckenrode, Josh Taylor & Chris Brands, Uncle George Bahto, Jeremy Glenn, Noel & Jim, and many others.

I would also like to comment on how well Paul produces these books. They are of the highest quality and unique look, and I'm sure it isn't an easy task.

Great job Paul!

er, uh... better correct that title, Tommy.  I mean I love Mr. Turner, he's a great guy, but well.....

I'm still waiting for my copy of Vol. 1... oh well... any tips on how to make amazon actually deliver books within a year?

Don't I feel like a collective ass, of course it would be you Huckaby to point that out to me.

Tommy - would you have rather left it as is?  I thought you might WANT to know... feel free to change it back to Turner if you wish.   ;D

And hey, Cirba pointed it out also...

Seriously though, is the only way to get these books to buy the edition Paul is allowed to sell directly?  I would really love to have copies of each and it's been quite frustrating waiting for amazon....

I agree wholeheartedly. I've only ready about 5 pieces in the book, but each was just simply superior.  I especially enjoyed the Colt and Alison pieces.  I also had my personal favorite.  ::)

This is a great addition to my library.  Which with this book has officially filled my dedicated bookshelf at home.  Now, maybe I can convince the wife to let me put some of them in the living room so others can see some of the great works by Richardson, Shackelford, Doak, Daley, MacDonald, MacKenzie, Klein, etc.

Chris,
There is little doubt that this is the Golden Age of Golf Books. So many great titles and subjects, which is funny, during the dark ages of Golf Architecture--which is widely believed to be between 1938 till the building of Harbor Town and Muirfield Village (and a brief glimpse in the 1980's) There were really none of signifcant acclaim--up until the publication of the quirky and lovable World Atlas of Golf.

Does anyone have both volumes?
Are they different?
Should you have both?

I just got my copy today.  The breadth of topics between the first and second volumes is outstanding.  A quick glance has me looking forward to reading the essays of Tom MacWood, Weed and Sherman, Kelly Moran, and many others.

Nick:

I do and you should too. The essays are different, but both Volumes are really classy, in my view. Further, I would certainly recommend both of Paul's earlier efforts.

Some people found Links Golf disappointing because of the photography. But, as I look back, that may have been a virtue for the book is really worth reading. By contrast, the photography in The Sandbelt is so stunning that you may not be able to read what has been written!

In sum, if you collect books about golf architecture you should own all four of the books Paul has done and anything else he decides to do.

I guess I should order VOL II so that I will get it some time next summer. :-)

Well I suppose that is good news, Craig.  My Vol. I still lists as not yet shipped, and I ordered it on Nov. 4, 2002.

I don't think I'm even gonna bother with Vol. II, unless Ed Getka or someone can get me one.

Oh well....

I got an email from Amazon saying volume I had shipped.  Got volume II a couple of days ago and it's a terrific read so far, including articles I don't quite agree with (see the piece by Gary Panks, for instance).  I am a little curious as to the choice of hole 5 at Whistling Straits for the cover.  It's one of the holes that really doesn't fit the course, though it does make a nice picture.  Actually, there are a ton of pix of WS, though not much discussion of it.

Craig: Hey mate, you've delivered some good news there! It is way out of my control, but I sense your ten month wait was due to Pelican Publishing (USA) insisting upon shipping both volumes out from China on the same boat, as opposed to shipping when completed. Happy reading.

Huck: Your frustration comes through load and clear. As it stands, with Craig receiving V1 and Jeff V2, it seems as though both volumes are starting to trickle through. Hang
in there old bean.

Jeff: Delighted to hear that GAV-2 has arrived and you're enjoying it to date. What really pleased me was your comment about not agreeing with some articles. This was precisely the point of the project; to present a worldwide account of golf architecture - one certain to spark discussion and a range of opinions - not a one-dimensional view.

Regarding the Whistling Straits cover, some inside info: as publisher, my cover bias is unimportant in the overall scheme of things; however, it is critical that potential customers find the chosen shot appealing enough to purchase a copy. And so, I draw up a shortlist of three images and conduct a survey/ranking test around my street. Ninety-five percent of the residents voted Whistling Straits as their preferred cover. As it turned out, they confirmed my pre-testing publisher's bias to go for the WS cover image.
