Sagebrush coming back (retitled)
« on: November 12, 2015, 10:58:27 PM »
Newmarket has completed purchasing Sagebrush Golf & Sporting Club. Here is part of  the news release

Quilchena, B.C. – Langley-based Newmark Group has purchased Sagebrush Golf & Sporting Club. The Newmark Group team has big plans for Sagebrush, considered to be one of the best courses in Canada and in the world.

While Newmark Group was set to purchase the property in October 2014, the deal did not close due to some permitting and zoning issues. Over the past year, key areas have been rezoned, building and proper usage permits have been acquired, and the sale was finalized in early November 2015.

The focus for the property includes building a 32,000 sq. ft. clubhouse with event facilities and extending the popular Badlands Patio & Grill area for spring 2016, which will add to its guest and event-hosting capacity. Plans also include the development of luxury resort homes that will be marketed as quarter-share resort properties.

The golf course will reopen for spring 2016. Didn't happen. Additional announcements about improvements and expansion to amenities offered will be made throughout the winter

Newmark Group is a full-service real estate development and construction company with offices in the Greater Vancouver area and Edmonton, Alberta. The Newmark team focuses on developing condominium, commercial, industrial and resort properties in British Columbia, Alberta and California.

Hopefully the homes will be kept away on the fringes to the south of the course....would hate to see a gem like that be spoiled with McMansions...

P.S.  Please tell me the hideaway Yurt will be keep intact....one of the coolest structures on a course anywhere.

They have paved service roads. One is above the second hole. Another you use on the way to the 5th tee and it runs pretty much to the 3rd teebox. A third goes down between 16 and 18. Plus you have the road to Terry's Hideout.

I'm just guessing there will be international memberships. Earlier today I used the contact link on their website to ask that very question.

Does anyone know how Troon Golf operates at a similar club?

One thing that vexes me in today's articles in their use of 'clubhouse'. They refer to the Badlands clubhouse as going to be renovated. My understanding was the reconstruction at the Badlands to meet disability access requirements was completed, and was a necessary preceder of the sale to Newmark.  Is the permitting of the clubhouse a week ago  for the proposed clubhouse just above the pro-shop/yert?

Pete and others,

Great news!  The previous owners did not use the term "Badlands Clubhouse" but I assume they must be renovating the cottage which had been used for breakfast and some dinners for a few years. There has never been a clubhouse so far, the closest to that being the Hideout which is not in the area of the cottages etc. The previous owners had intended to include the pro shop in the lodge to be built near where the pro shop yurt has been in previous years. It was also in the original plans to have a dining room in the clubhouse / lodge.

Regarding the homes, the lots there are very large and there were, as I recall, 37 in total which would be spread out over a large area so I don't expect they will be imposing from the course.

I see the name of Jim McLaughlin associated with Troon. I believe, and will check out if he is from the same McLaughlin family associated for many years with Shaughnessy.

I would love to get another group of GCAers up there.

I'm hoping to plan a trip there this summer.  Always tough to get time off from the course as our golf season is only six months and unfortunately matches up with interior BC.  If there is a group meeting up I would definitely make an effort.

Link to today's Vancouver Sun article. Refers bringing the course into shape and an intent to increase daily play, but no particulars. Plus slight background on top tier management.

Don't expect any news this month.  April 1st seems to be the date. No reservations for golf or lodging can be made before then, and that is around when the website becomes operational and rates are announced.

What's the best way to get to Sagebrush from Toronto. Fly in to Kelowna and drive?

Kelowna, Kamloops or Abbotsford are all pretty good options. Easy driving from any of those places.

Abbotsford must be 2+ hours to Sagebrush.  The others are closer?

Kelowna would likely be 90 min and may not have as many flights.

Once you hit Hope you can clock 140km/h and make good time.

There are directly flights from Toronto to Kelowna, at least in the summer.

Driving from the Kelowna Airport to Sagebrush will consume two hours. From the Vancouver airport to Sagebrush is closer to four hours. The Kamloops airport is just over an hour from Sagebrush but if you are coming from Toronto, you would have to fly to Calgary or Vancouver and then connect to Kamloops.

It really depends on any other golf you may want to try out around Kelowna or at the coast. Tobiano is less than an hours drive from Sagebrush but is close to Kamloops.

Sagebrush is worth the effort to get there.

Bob,

I would second that.  I drove up there for the KP a few years ago from Spokane, which was a nice drive. Sagebrush itself was terrific and certainly exceeded my expectations, and I couldn't think of a better place to spend after the round than the hideout...!!

From the Troon emag
http://www.troongolf-digitalmag.com/MayJun2016#&pageSet=0&contentItem=0

The pro shop yurt would seem to be gone, merged into the dining room/patio on the lower level of the east-most cottage. The single rooms in that cottage are likely gone. It seems like they have fiddled to some degree with the hide-out. No mention of any memberships (annual or otherwise). Besides the course, everything that drew me into taking an annual membership requiring all day trips to and from seem to have been eliminated.

Troon Golf reports there are two major building projects ongoing. I assume they are the remodel of the lower level of Winchester cottage (furthest east) and something at the Hideout
