Pine Valley renovation

Pine Valley closes tomorrow for 6 weeks for a refurbishment. Not sure what is being done, the members haven't been told, but looking forward to seeing the results.

He is obviously a member and their GCA for many years so I'd be surprised if he didn't have a hand in the changes, whatever they may be.

Talked to,some of the loopers yesterday and they said it looks like some bunker work and maybe some tree clearing . They were sure about the bunkers and think that more rough will be eliminated . Guess to invite ball to run into same if they expand them .


Hope we see some tree clearing , it will look awesome .

There were 8 of your guys out here at Bandon for the last few days playing a Ryder Cup match against our top players (organized by Keiser).  They confirmed the bunker work.


Unfortunately for them, the score over three days ended up something like 21 1/2 to 3 1/2.

Is there a place where Tom Fazio's "bunker work" on a classic course has been at all consistent with the historical look, feel, and functionality of the previous bunkers?    If so, I haven't seen it.

My personal favorites in order would be the entire left side of #12 first , followed by the backdrop behind the ninth green . Those two would be awesome . After that I would love to expose the left side of 13, starting  at Holmans' Hollow and moving towards the fifteenth fairway .


Removing all the trees on #12 would be a revelation . The myriad of small bunkers still exist amongst the foliage , and exposing them to the tee would be spectacular . I can just see the bombers pulling out the lumber and firing at the green . Woe to those who surely would find some pernicious pits .


As an aside In discussions with TEP he mentioned Mark Bougeios nice work with photo imagery and suggested that shading (shadows) might have an impact in the comparisons presented. It's a little outside my area of expertise but would expect Mark would be able to explain further.

Haven't played before, but have heard that each hole is isolated, and can feel like you are on the course alone in a tranquil dream. Is there any amount of tree removal that would impact on this, and does this matter if it ultimately improves the hole, strategy and playability? I guess this question could apply to any number of inland courses.

No, and that is what made the place special from day one.

Quibble: The golf course has been renovating itself every second of every day since it opened for play.

    Having been there recently, I couldn't agree more. The only spot you may have left out are the right center trees at the bottom of the LZ on #13. Another prominent GCA'er and I both remarked how the "pernicious pits" still there served as ample deterrence to the long baller's!

Haven't been there in too long but are there still bunkers in the woods on the left side of 15 going up to the green?  How about restoring the alternate fairway on 17?
