The worst sound in golf (OT)
« on: November 06, 2015, 08:23:47 PM »
I heard it today at my home course.

It's worse than the clank of a shank.

Worse than a Tour player shouting "Get in the bunker!"

Worse, even, than the yahoos who scream "Get in the hole!" and "Mashed potatoes!" EVERY DAMNED SHOT.

Yes, gentlemen (and ladies, if any), today I heard the worst sound in golf: the hiss of the sprinkler lines being blown out.

Winter is on the horizon.

Condolences are welcome.

Sprinkler blowout means firm and fast if you get playable days thereafter!

Mr. Glass Half Full, meet Mr. Glass Half Empty -- if you can even see him, that is, through your rose-coloured glasses.

Myself, I'm with Dan in the Half Empty Camp; except to say, he may not have heard, at least not recently, the sound of a tee shot hit off the toe of a persimmon driver that's very rapidly being 'turned over' to  produce a low quail-hook that darts into the trees 50 yards away. That too is amongst the worst of sounds.

Yes, that is a very unpleasant sound indeed - either on, off, or near a golf course, or at home or at the office, and especially for the elderly.

Peter -

It's a problem I have with Dornoch, though I hear the frequency of RAF bombing runs in the firth has been reduced in the years since my last visit.

There is a course here in ATL that is a couple of miles from the end of a main east/west Hartsfield runway. There are moments when you can't hear the person sitting next to you in a golf cart.

On the other hand, a friend of mine annually organized a golf outing to a course near a military base that hosted an air show -- on the day of the big show.  "Best seat in the house," he said of hacking around the course while the planes roared overhead. "And cheaper than VIP seating."

Come down to Pensacola and play on a day when the Blue Angels are practicing overhead!  Hard to hear yourself think.  Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the air show season.

Tough to beat the sound of a golf ball hitting a house.  Not sure what's worse - the sound or the anticipation of the sound...

Worse is the sound of a golf ball breaking a window in a house. That happened to a friend of mine several years ago. An outraged woman with a baby in her arms greeted us in the middle of the fw as we approached our drives. The rest of the story - some of it funny, some of it not so funny - is too long and complicated to recount here.

It's much quieter in St Andrews these days with the departure of the Tornadoes and Typhoons of the RAF from Leuchars. There's some chat about a return with recent interesting Russian activity near our airspace though.
Stan D and I were playing the Eden on the queen's birthday and got a nice diamond nine overhead.
I was also playing St Andrews Bay with Mr and Mrs Redan on the day of Leuchars Airshow once and we got a glorious view of the entire show for free!

The sound of steel spikes on concrete because then I will know I have died and gone to heaven. Now when I hear the sound of irons clicking in a double strapped bag I wonder if I am in hell.

There was a similar thread about a month or two ago. My answer remains the same - the sound of a golf ball making contact with someones head. A sickening sound.

On the other hand some good sounds would include the rattle of a ball finding the bottom of a hole, the thump of a properly played bunker shot, metals spikes on a surfaced pathway and persimmon on balata.

Two similar sounds that I enjoy; Range balls emptying into a bucket from a rusty dispenser, and ice filling a hotel bucket. Either way I know that I will soon be sweating and smiling.

Gentlemen,

The rising wail of the siren sounding on the golf course insisting that I curtail my game, due to impending lightning strikes, when I am two under my handicap with only two holes left to play!  Och I hate being thwarted!

Cheers Colin
