The bureaucrats have hundreds, maybe thousands, of voices talking in their ear...The developer thinks his is the only voice that matters. The more voices, the more things evolve.
We are no longer a country of laws.

Sean , just for clarity my rant wasn't  in support for Mike Keiser's project . Rather it was disgust with the process government and governmental agencies pick and choose "deals" .  Sure it's not always cut and dry what is the right or best plan but it shouldn't be so political .

This practice has spread into local government , making the cost of getting a permit almost equal to the construction of same .  At the end of the day the price gets passed on to all the taxpayers who pay the bureaucratic tab . It also limits the ability of small vendors to compete in an increasingly unfair marketplace.

" I am glad we have some pencil pushers in place who ask hard questions, demand a high return and generally protect public land."

Archie's story doesn't support that premise.

It sounds like we are talking about two different things.  Archie's story should in no way imply (and I don't think that was the gist of his post) that public land should be offered up to private companies without serious scrutinity and skepticism.  It should be very difficult to pull off a deal such as Keiser was seeking.

What percentage of the caddies were born in the county?  I seem to always get stuck with a traveling grifter.  I can't see how another course benefits the people who lived in the area before the first course was ever built.

I've never been to Yellowstone.  Shame it wasn't sold to Disney, I'd have pics of my kids next to Old Faithful.  I can't believe the National Park system just might survive my generation.

Visiting Yellowstone should be as obligatory as paying taxes.

It should be just as easy to sell public land to private interests as it is to seize private land for public use. If the Oregon case proves that point, it's all good.

A similar story is playing out with Herb Kohler's proposed course near Whistling Straits along Lake Michigan:

The image of the American golfer is at an all time low while environmentalists are having their day.  It's going to take a few more years of Jordan Speith to undo this.

:)  Gonna take a lot more than that, but then you know that, judging by your other posts.

Thanks for posting the link to the other piece, Pete Pittock. My own few brushes with the media leave me feeling similar to jeffwarne, skeptical of everything written or reported.

I'm always sympathetic to people like archie - and not just because I shared a round with him at Twisted Dunes and loved every moment of it. I suspect if more people had to interact on a regular basis, there may be more shared cynicism about our friendly bureaucrats. But alas, in our world, it's only bad if it happens to you, not to someone else, or so say most...

I worked for the government for a while and the best times of my life involved nailing a developer who thought they could come in town and suck out an easy profit.  It almost was as fun as the eminent domain land grab we made for a new city hall.  It's really just a matter of sport and nothing personal.

I am unclear as to what the issue is here.  Why should it be easy to sell/swap public land for the purpose of building a golf course?

I can't imagine its easy to cease private land, but that too should involve a strenuous process...especially if it is a matter of seizing a golf course to be used for a leisure activity such a natural area.

I've been to Yellowstone and while it is very interesting, its also very "sanitized."

Tourists everywhere, stay on the marked paths only, make sure to stop by the lodge to pick up your souvenirs on the way home, etc.

I'd be much more interested in going somewhere that's still left in its pristine state....

P.S.  I wish all those pics of Old Faithful were zoomed out to see what a production it has become.  Totally a buzz kill to having a interesting raw interaction with mother nature.

"Mike Keiser, the owner of the famed Bandon Dunes Resort, released a statement through KemperSports announcing his intention to terminate the proposed Bandon Links project in Southern Oregon."

Where I'm from this is known as throwing your toys out the pram. Shoddy behaviour all round although I recognise that it might have been done with purpose ie. try and bounce the local authority into giving him what he wants by threatening to walk away. Basically the same tactic as that other cowboy Trump.

My friend Archie Struthers was hosed by the locals when he constrcuted his course; since he & I tried to workj through quite a few of the road blocks thrown at the project so it would not succeed. In the real estate development business, we live by the motto " It's far easier to apologize than to ask permission."

If I was MK and ooking for water, the would have told my guys to go dig a few wells to see if you could find a water source. Cap the well when youre done so no one gets hurt and make sure you can fins the spot agian in the future if you need to.

In the context of a developer seeking to buy an environmentally sensitive site from a public body where there is a high degree of public scrutiny and skepticism, that would surely rank as one of the dumbest bits of advice ever given.

Not the first time I've been called dumb on this site, won't be the last.  Well worth the moderate risk level IMHO, since not locating adequate water would make all of the other required give backs in the deal moot since inadequate irrigation water + givebacks + permitting obstacles + local opposition = no project.  The deal died with minimal capital outlay and little bad PR for what is a terrific facility.

But what do I know.
