H bunker St Andrews
« on: July 21, 2015, 11:37:56 AM »
Just read an interview with Hawtree in golf world and he mentioned a  "H" bunker that was once on the first fairway. Does anybody know anything about this bunker?

There was a bunker between the 1st and 18th, can't recall when it was filled in. Bear in mind also that the 1st fairway is mainly made ground hence the reason its so flat, so quite few changes there over the years.

It was called Halket's (sp?) Bunker. It appears in an old painting of TOC from about 1790. It seems to have disappeared in the first half of the 19th century. I visited the 18th fairway with Peter Lewis a couple of years ago. Our guess was contour lines still visible in the fw mark its old location.

Halket's Bunker may have had something to do with the old 21st green before the TOC was reduced to 18 holes. But just speculation.
