Does the quality of the 18th hole at Carnoustie, plus Van de Velde and Paddy/Sergio, qualify?

Or #18 at St Andrews: Valley of Sin plus Jack/yellow sweater plus Rocca/Daly?

Its not entirely satisfactory, but this is what I come up with thus far.  If more than one choice, those in
bold are the ones I would lean toward.
1.       Machrihanish
2.       Dornoch (not so sure about this one)
3.       Cardinal & Cader
4.       Woking, Klondyke & Sandwich (very tough choice)
5.       Dell & Himalayas (very tough choice)
6.       St Enodoc
7.       Ballybunion Old, Rye or Sunny Old? (really struggling to find the right hole)
8.       Postage Stamp
9.       Brancaster & Co Down
10.   Belfry or Gibraltor
11.   Eden
12.   Addington or Swinley? (really struggling to find the right hole)
13.   Pit & Sea Hedrig
14.  Foxy, Calamity Corner & Long (very tough choice)
15.   Redan
16.   Gate
17.   Road Hole & Alps (extremely tough choice)

18.   Carnoustie or The Old Course

Not sure if I understand the question or the meaning of the word iconic, but...

the second hole at Portsalon would seem a fantastic edition to any composite GB&I list.

A couple of late additions that I don't think anyone has mentioned. The 13th at Silloth to my mind is a wonderful par 5 that is both unique and memorable. I was tempted to also nominate the 2nd, 3rd and 4th as well but thought that might be pushing it although I do think they stand favourable comparison to those listed that I've played.

If you are struggling for a choice for the second let me suggest the 2nd at Glasgow Gailes. Along with the 8th and 9th it makes a fantastic trio of shortish par 4's.

Finally, in my campaign to get Moray Old pushed up the rankings, I would agree with whoever suggested the 18th. TOC 18 might be more iconic but 18th Moray Old certainly doesn't lack granduer or presence.

I'm with Jeff.

For a minute I thought I understood the question until I saw the Road Hole and the Alps Hole listed as a tough choice. But then it's not my list.

A tough choice between the two as the 17th...for sure.  If it were me I would take Alps all day long, but the Road Hole has the championship history.

I'm not totally sure about 3, "Cader" at Aberdovey. Once-upon-a-time maybe, but these days, it's just sooooo different to what photographs and drawings show it once was. I appreciate that most, maybe all, holes change over time, but "Cader", and I'm an Aberdovey fan, seems so drastically different now as to be inappropriate for such a listing. Maybe not not quite so inappropriate as say including the "Maiden" at RStG or a NLE hole but you'll probably get my drift.

PS - the 1st at Machrihanish must be one fine hole to better the once-played/seen-never-forgotten 1st at Royal Jersey! :)
