A Royal Ace
« on: June 02, 2015, 12:51:52 PM »
By none other than GCA's David Tepper

And, yes that was on the 10th at Royal Dornoch, this afternoon.

So I got to play RDC, and I got a pint of Magners afterward.

FWIW, it looked perfect from the second it left the clubface. Landed just over the front bunker, disappeared, reappeared, and the disappeared for good.

Congratulations David, and thanks for having us.

Well done David. How many H-i-O's have you had?

BTW, from other threads isn't this hole supposed to be played by landing short of the bunkers and jumping over them? :) :)

Well done Mr. Tepper!

I think your ace is 4 shots better than any score I made on #10 during my visit to Dornoch.

I'll collect my drink when I'm in San Francisco in November!   ;D

David,

After all the attempts over the years I would say it was about time.

Congratulations on doing it on the course so close to your heart.

Ken -

Thanks for taking & posting the pic. Glad you all could join me today. And thanks very much for alerting me to the notion that the ball might actually go in the hole, after I had broken one of my cardinal rules for playing at Dornoch - "don't ever take your eye off the ball until it has stopped rolling!"

Thomas -

This was my 4th H-i-O, which is surely testament that they are far more dependent on luck than skill.

The idea of playing short of the green and bounding over the fronting bunkers is more applicable when the hole is playing downwind rather than into the wind (as it was today).

Bill -

I will look forward to seeing you in SF in November.

Well heck, nobody told me about that trick. Here I was thinking it absolutely impossible to actually hit that green in regulation (I'm 0-for-lifetime at it) but all you've got to do is knock it in the hole. I'll keep that in mind, next visit.

Well done, David!  Just goes to show what a great hole #10 is.

Congrats, David!!!

I now have two friends who have made a HIO on Dornoch's 10th... you and Stan Dodd. I was there to see Stan's... wish I could have been there for yours!

Maybe I can make it for the next one!  ;D

Congratulations, David!

And, Peter, based on real-world experience, I can confirm that you're quite right.

Now, Ken, I want to know whether you or someone in your group hit it stiff on 10--i.e., in addition to David's hole-in-one--or whether that other ball is the up of someone's up-and-down.

I'm not sure.  I think it might be my wife's second, it wasn't mine....

Well done David.  I was five groups behind and heard the story from Andrew at the half way house.

Congratulations, David, I just wish I had been there.  Truly could not happen to a nicer guy.  I take it from the windbreaker and stocking cap you are wearing in the photo that summer has still not made it to the Highlands.

Gentleman -

Thanks once more for your kind words.

Mike L. - Yes, as my attire indicates, it was another brisk spring day in the bonnie Highlands. Since we arrived on May 8 it has been as cold & windy as I can ever remember it being here this time of year.

Tony M. - A modest halfway house was built 25 yards to the right of the 9th green 3-4 years ago. It is unobtrusive and barely visible even when standing on the 9th green.

Niall - Since I no longer even attempt to reach the green on #2 & #6 at Dornoch, future H-i-O's there are unlikely. ;)

DT

P.S. I should add that my recent good fortune pales next to my wife being a member of the winning side of the "3-Lady Team" event at Royal Dornoch on May 16. She and her two young teammates were first in a field of 44 teams. They even got their picture in the local newspaper. In some circles I am now known as "Mr. Lauren Tepper."  ;)
