Don't know much about the club's beginnings, but I like the name Riviera.

Others would be...

Seminole
Maidstone
Winged Foot
Wentworth-The Burma Road

Some of those Aussie courses have great names, none of which I can think of now.  :)

I know Pat, I just refuse to use smilies.

I was sure someone was going to come up with "But its official name is THE Cypress Point Club" or something like that.

A bit late in the day, I'm afraid, but what a bastard course you could create out of El Prat with French Lick.  I always think Western Gailes is particularly appropriate for a course on the Ayrshire Coast with absolutely no shelter from the prevailing winds.  But the biscuit is taken by The Belfry.  Their PR people obviously don't know their Lewis Carroll?  Carroll (he of Alice fame) wrote a brief treatise on the etymological significance of the word Belfry:

The word ‘Belfry’ is derived from the French bel, “beautiful, becoming, meet”, and the German word frei, “free, unfettered, safe.”  Thus the word is strictly equivalent to ‘meatsafe’, to which the new belfry bears a resemblance so perfect as almost to amount to coincidence.

He was actually describing the new belfry erected in the corner of Tom Quad, Christ Church, Oxford, but it could just as well describe the non-descript architecture of The Belfry's clubhouse and hotel.

Brock,

Other courses in Wilmington, NC area include:  The Gauntlet, Porter's Neck, Bald Head Island, and the 'copy cat' Pine Valley.

If you are in Wichita, look out for Clapp. The ladies there still go by the course's original name Meadowlark, not wanting to be reffered to as the Clapp Ladies.
I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.
