Re: Seminole Architectural Redux
« on: January 12, 2015, 07:56:44 PM »
Crossing off one of the two biggies I have not yet played soon.  I've interviewed two people about the course for the radio show and they both marveled at what a wonderful club iy is with "terrific Ross features."

What are some of the great Ross features?  What are some of your favorite holes?  What are the iconic things to do when visiting Seminole?  What does it do better than the competition that makes it stand above so many other great courses around the country?

Jay,

I could fill page after page about what's great about Seminole, but, I'd rather have the course reveal itself to you in person.

You won't be disappointed.

I just hope that there's a one to two club breeze on the day you play

Do not go pin hunting.
Just go for the center of the green and you'll get better results.

I'll bite and say the variety of shot options. From 150 yards as an example you can hit 3 or 4 clubs. Take it high or take it low.

Hope you like fast greens.

Supposedly they have issues with the tee sheet. Fivesomes are a problem. Couldn't resist.  ;D ;D

But is this the most ridiculous thread ever?

Jay,

One of the great assets of Seminole, which you can't experience in one play, is how differently the course plays as the direction of the wind changes.

# 10 may be exhibit # 1.

Downwind (prevailing) it plays dramatically different, in terms of club selection, trajectory and ball flight, than it does when it's into the wind or crosswinds.

In addition, hole location dramatically changes how you would play each hole.

I'm hoping that # 10 will have the pin cut to the far left.
If so, it takes incredible nerve to go for the pin, not just on your approach, but on recoveries and putts.

Have fun

Jay,

Have you read Ran's course profile? Also, the search function should turn up eleventy billion or so posts on the course. Have fun! Bring swim trunks.

Patrick,

Can you please explain to this moron how hole location dramatically changes how you would play each hole when you get better results just going for the centre of the green?  :)

Moron Mark,

I'd be happy to explain.

Since I used # 10 as an example, let's stick with that hole.

If the pin is cut far left, front left or back left, even if you're not a moron and go to the center of the green, those putts are frightening and difficult.  And, if the wind is from the East, it's even more difficult.

It's a really, really frightening hole location

With the pin cut up front on holes like # 2, 3,  # 11, 12, 13, 14 and 18, putts from the center of the green are very, very difficult.
And, if you're downwind......... Prayer won't help

Be sure to take a dip in the pool.  Pristine water.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Jay,

Having played it anumber of times. My thoughts.

Pray for a brisk wind.
The caddies are the best. Listen to them.
I agree with Pat. Stay below the hole and target the middle third . Have your caddie determine if you should target the hole location.
It's all there in front of you off the tee . Hole 2 , for example. Draw of the tee , fade to the green . Hole 6, get as close as you can on the left side.Hole 8 ,take one more club. Split fairway on 5 par, favor the left. Pay attention to the breeze on 17. Run it up on 4
Locker room, best in the world. Check out the plaques and there leather bound photo albums on a table . If you have the time, a dark and stormy and a good cigar as you peruse the history of one of the great courses and clubs on the planet.
Staff is exceptional, Bob Ford one of the great guys in golf.Have one of the attendents point out Hogan's locker.
Don't take a dip in the pool , you may not get invited back.
Whatever they have for lunch will be great.
When you leave, thank the Lord for the opportunity.
I've played 78 of the most recent Top 100. If I could be a member at any Course of my choosing , I would choose Seminole. It has a feel, an ambiance that few possess. Course, Iam biased, I watched Hogan hit balls at Seminole when I was 11. My Uncle Ed Wilson was a buddy of Mr. Dunphy.

Enjoy, take it all in. Let us know how your day went.

I always pray for wind!  I live for it.  Nae wind, nae golf:)

Of course I read Ran's profiles and I also read the profiles in two other good books as well, but I'd like to hear what you guys have t say about...including recent things, not just threads from years ago.

I'm not going too overboard reading things because I want to be surprised, but I also don't want to miss anything quintessentially Seminole either.  I am looking forward to the strategies on the par-4s the most.  Holes like 6 and 12 for example.

Jay, the golf course is spectacular, but to address another question my advice is to leave plenty of time for drinks in the locker room after play.  Seminole has perhaps the best locker room in golf.  Make sure to check out the club yearbooks which rest on the shelves in the center of the locker room.  Lots and lots of cool stuff there.  Additionally, there is a book on the history of the club which is for sale in the golf shop.

The club is a gem...enjoy and have fun!

Jay - The approach on #6 baffled the heck out of me. Draw off the tee and then you need to play a cut shot to the green -- and the bunkers were more visually penal than real (IMO). Absolutely spend some time in the locker room. All our post golf activity was confined to there.

Dan,

My cut shot never shows up when needed :-\ so I chose to take on the bunker and ended up with this kick in Mr. Hogan would've been proud of. :)

This.

Give yourself a pre-determined limit for the pro shop which is inch for inch one of the best.

The water on #7 IS reachable off the tee with a well-struck drive despite what the expert caddy might say.

Also be sure to whip out your phone and take as many pictures as it can hold. Especially make sure to get a pic in the locker room of Mr. Mucci's most famous win.

Lastly, lobster bisque for the win.
Did you know World Woods has the best burger I've ever had in my entire life? I'm planning a trip back just for another one between rounds.

Patrick Hodgdon,

To reach the water on # 7 requires a 300 yard drive, usually into a good breeze.

You must not be familiar with Jay's game.

Or, were you referencing getting over the water in two ? ;D

Jay,

Seems like you are quite the architecture nut.

To get the most out of you architectural exploration I would recommend the following:

- Dont allow yourself to be distracted by anything non-architectural, don't visit the clubhouse, don't visit the pro shop, don't use the main entrance.
- Dont play golf, it will distract you in your quest to spot architectural features. Just walk around.
-take a sketch pad.

Enjoy.

He is certainly not familiar with Jay's game but he did hit it in the water.  Big hitter!
