Best new course for 2015?
« on: December 30, 2014, 10:14:53 AM »

What courses are opening in 2015? What course are you most looking forward to playing?

One course that opens is Ferry Point GC. While it looks good, I am not sure I would go out of my play to play it. I would rather play Blackpage Black when I am in the New York area.

I've got three courses opening in 2015, though none of them are in the U.S.  Of those, I'm most looking forward to playing the back nine at Tara Iti in April.  If it's as fun to play as the front nine, we'll have something pretty special down there.

I'm also hoping we'll have a few holes at Forest Dunes playable by October [the first holes will be planted in May], so we can try them out forwards and backwards, but it will be late summer of 2016 before the whole course is ready.

Cabot Cliffs is at the top of the list.  Hopefully, I can find the time and money to make the trip.

If I was a millionaire, Tara Iti and Cape Wickham would each be a must.  One day!

Tom, regarding Tara Iti, does the course and site resemble anything you've done in the past, or, is it completely unique?

I had the pleasure of walking Tara Iti and it is really something special.  The holes on the back nine are going to be spectacular and combine that with the front nine (which are already amazing), and you have a course that I consider to be better than Cape Kidnappers.

Cabot Cliffs & Cape Wickham would be the others.

Silvies Valley Ranch may be ready for play in 2015. I haven't gotten an update from Slag to find out their progress in the last year. When an official opening may occur has always been up in the air.

Well, some posters feel that all my courses are pretty much alike.

I would say the closest thing to Tara Iti is the back nine at Barnbougle, in terms of terrain and oceanfront exposure [though there is no hole that plays right along the beach like #18 at Barnbougle].  You are up a bit from sea level with views out to the water from every hole, not down in big dunes like the front nine at Barnbougle.  [There are no such big dune valleys at Tara Iti.]

The main difference between Tara Iti and my other seaside courses is that there is a LOT more open sand here than anywhere else, because we had to tear down planted pine trees over the whole site and revegetate with native plants.  It will get a bit thicker over time, but right now, outside the fairways, it's more like Pine Valley or Streamsong than most links courses are.

Thanks Tom!  The course sounds fantastic.  I am going to have to make that trip sooner than later.

Playing Cape Wicham in the first week of April, so I certianly hope it is good enough to be in the reckoning come years end.
Although their lack of rain over the past six months has slowed down the maturation process quite alot.
Not that conditioning at this early stage of a golf courses life should be of concern on evaluation or judgement.

I am anxious to play Eckenrodes' Golden Nugget course in Louisiana. Having had the privilege to collaborate with him on that project, I want to see if it plays as imagined. I think they're shooting for a March opening.

About as bad a site as you can start with, so it won't compete with many mentioned above, but that doesn't lower my expectations or enthusiasm to play there. I have heard that there was some changes in the landscaping around the course after we left, so I hope it isn't in a negative way.

Yes, that Silvies Valley Ranch is a very interesting project.  Lots of good info on their website, and it shows with pictures how some of the holes will be reversible.

It says on the website: "Taking all the time we need to make it perfect; planning/construction started in 2010, with play expected in 2018 – or later if we need it. "  But it also says:  " In 2014 the irrigation will be installed with seeding immediately following."

Awesome!  2 reversible golf courses opening over the next couple years.  Trend setting?  What else has Dan Hixson done?

Joe, where is that in Louisiana?   With us in Pensacola and son Davis in Houston, I cross Louisiana on I-10 a couple of times a year.

Bill,

In Lake Charles, next door to the L'Auberge Resort and Tom Fazio-designed Contraband Bayou, a new Golden Nugget resort and casino, along with a championship golf course, is scheduled to open in mid-to-late 2014. The golf course, designed by Todd Eckenrode, is currently unnamed.

Sounds great but by the time we reach Lake Charles all I can think of is, are we almost there?

With just a little over of a five hour drive, Cabot Cliffs will be the one I most look forward to in the new year.  By most reports, it will leap to the top of the rating charts almost immediately.
Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

Are they ever going to open a new course in Cal again? Seems like years since something new has opened. Poppy Hills is about as close as new as anything recently. Anything planned for the future?
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I think it's illegal now.

My client for Tara Iti actually lives in Los Angeles.  But he figured it was much easier to build in New Zealand and commute over there, than to try to get permits in California for something cool.

Yes, Cabot Cliffs will be the best course in 2015 but i would say that is in Canada.

Are there are any other courses that are growing in this winter?
