Well done and thanks Mark. Lots of work to put this listing together.

Olde photos always seem to show significantly less scrub and trees on courses. Grazing animals, firewood or changes in golfing tastes I wonder (or a bit of each)?

Hi Mark,

The following show Dewsbury & District GC where I and Dean Stokes of this site learned our golf.

1. Is a view of the 15th hole coming down from the top and 16th tee crossing in front of the green at right angles. Also the 2nd green and 3rd hole are just visible.

Great stuff with morning coffee.....

You can sure see general levels of maintenance improvement by comparing the Troon photos from 1927 to 1952. Even with the presumably good roaring 20's economy to the possible post war recession (not entirely sure about how Britain came out of it) the levels of maintenance are much higher.

Lovely work! A few comments on locations I visited this past August.

Bamburgh Castle has many fine views of the castle but none of the golf course that I can discern.

Niarn (Dunbar?) - definitely NOT Dunbar.

Nice find on Royal Aberdeen.

The 1st hole on the RAGC Championship course plus holes 1-5 on the Silverburn course are I believe the holes visible in the 1959 photo. Interesting to note how much more land/dune there seems to be behind the 1st green on the Championship course in the old aerial than nowadays. The profile of the entrance to the River Don is quite different too, the southern spit being far more pronounced in the old photo. Ever shifting sand.

Mark - I think the course you label Woking is actually the ninth and tenth greens of New Zealand. Woodham Lane is a long road, but it runs past the course - it's the A245 and as far as I can see, Danewell House is the large dwelling on a cul de sac called 'Woodlands' close to the A245's intersection with the A320 Chertsey Road.

Adam, Thank you for identifying it as New Zealand. It didn't dawn on me that it was close to Woking.

Everyone, thanks for correcting my errors and omissions. If I were ashamed of my inaccuracy I should never post these links, and I think this collection very valuable - Royal Jersey before the German invasion, for instance. How much survived and how much is new today?

I was very interested to see those pics of RJ before the Germans built the sea wall. I'm travelling with only a small laptop so can't really identify the details too closely, but shall have a better look on my large screened Mac when I get home next weekend.

I go along with you Mark, a very valuable collection. As to other such collections to tap into I believe there is a significant source of aerial photos of the UK&I taken by the Luftwaffa prior to and during WWII. I'm not sure the collection is public access though, it may be of the pay-to-see variety.

As to Royal Jersey, in the 1933 aerial there appears to be a long line of beach huts stretching from about level with the middle of the 2nd hole and running alongside the 3rd hole all heading northwards. Not there now.

Great spot though Royal Jersey what with first 3 holes at RJGC all running alongside the beach and Mont Orgueil Castle in the distance. Probably the most photogenic holes I can ever recall playing, and the opening tee shot with the wind off the left, the beach immediately on the right and the fortifications on each side is pretty daunting/fun. Worth playing.

Fantastic, well done Mark. I loved looking at the Bundoran course photo which I think I'm right in saying was credited to Vardon ? Played it once and thoroughly enjoyed it although I don't remember the square greens too much !
