The oldest golfing grounds in the world!!!

Please let me know if this is a big yawn to GCA community because I have plenty of other things to do with my time than to post pictures of what I think are terrific golf courses to an indifferent audience.

A nine hole course which is the oldest golfing grounds in the world. It is now surrounded by an equestrian racetrack. I was surprised at the quality of the greens for such an early course. HUGE undulations in many.

Very cool!...never seen a GCA-taken photo tour of Musselburgh.

I have always thought two rounds at M-O, one as normal, one with hickories would be a wonderful day.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Quite the opposite. Terrific stuff. Bamburgh was splendid and so is this. Keep posting them!

Couldn't agree more. I spoke to my wife about visiting Northumberland last night purely based on your photos of Bamburgh Castle. keep them coming.

Wonderful photos Malcolm that brought back fond memories when my wife and I played this course back in June as an add-on to the better known Gullane area courses. I was delighted that we made the effort, although I spend just as much time absorbing the history than playing the course. The starter also acted as the historian who kindly answered all my questions, even made me an honorary member ( for the day I suppose) for taking the time to learn about this fabled ground. This course almost closed twenty years ago so any and all interest in getting the word out is important. This course needs as much exposure as possible and is essential to any golf historian's resume. Well done Malcolm.

Thanks Malcom!  I have been unable to play the course but I did stay in the town for a few days visiting a friend.  The course appeared to have a lot more undulation than photos show.  I have always wanted to return to play it but have not been back to Scotland.

Some day!

I have been told that the racecourse has been surrounding the golf course for as long as 150 years.  Can someone confirm this?

Please keep the tour progressing, I to have always avoided playing there offput by the racetrack idea, but this is changing my mind.

Malcolm,

Very good photos of a very enjoyable course/experience! Scotlands Set of 9 hole courses is stunning.

I did do a Photo tour of musselburgh a few years ago http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,45388.0.html , however your photos do a much better job in highlighting the details of the course, please keep on!

Cheers

Keep it coming, Malcolm. I planned a trip to Scotland with my non golfer wife to occur during the Edinburgh Arts/Fringe Festival. My wife knew I was to play TOC twice and N.Berwick once. But I know my wife so I arranged a b+b in Musselburgh 9 months before we arrived. I knew she would want a rest some afternoon. I asked " do you mind if I play this little course up the road?"   I loved it.

Wow - I always thought when people said: "the original Musselburgh is inside a race track" that meant it was like most other courses inside race tracks - a total dump! But it looks lovely - thanks for bringing this to my attention as I will definitely give it a go if I make an itinerary in its vicinity.
Which courses inside racetracks have you played that are total dumps?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Malcolm,

Alnmouth please - especially if you've got the original now 'Alnmouth Village GC' bit - apparently England's oldest 9-hole course.

Splendid tours. Well done.

As to courses within the rails at horse racing tracks try this 2013 thread - http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,55286.0.html

I love it. Just 13 months ago my wife and I were playing the fifth while a couple of the local errant youth were frolicking in the sprinklers and in and out of the bunkers.

Before it was over, the youngest one called her a "fookin' bitch." They appeared to be carrying a.chair from the tavern's patio.

Some kind of local color.
