I know a legendary Attorney who is very much cognizant about the design of the courtroom. It is his stage, and he uses every part of it for practical and dramatic effect in his craft. Other attorney's come to watch him work, and he often instructs them on what he uses as a sense of place and position of the players in that court room to present his case in the most effective manner.
Yes, there are many very successful golfers that are autonomatons that just hit it exactly the correct distance and with precision like lawn darts, and on such a surface that holds dead stop due to softness and predictable texture of ball rollout and ground response along with the desire to have no wind to have to factor in and they may just as soon hit precise shots on the range. And we watch them win and often we are bored. Then again there are the craftsman that play the course and conditions with discernible craftsmanship of a multitude of cleaver shots and an arsenal of tricks and ability to read the conditions of ground, wind and even temperature, and they may not hit it as far or precise in the aerial lawn dart sense, but they feel the game and evaluate the strategy to allow them to break through for a successful outcome; and we love to watch them work. Think Corey Pavin at Shinnicock or Tom Watson at Turnberry VS many of the pros shooting sub 7-10 unders at John Deere.
To add a bit to this mentality of precision golfers vs those that embrace the links challenge, I am personally dismayed that my hometown favorite decides to forego a trip to "The Open". I don't know why he seems adverse to the pursuit, or if it is an aversion to links courses. Afterall, he once won on a sandbelt course in his early career at Royal Melbourne a couple decades ago now. I don't know if it is the autonomaton aversion to the vagueries of links golf, or this notion that is becoming trite stated by all the commentators of how he is this family guy who prefers to stay home with the kids, is semi-retired, Mr nice guy, blah blah. Let him skip the John Deere since he already won it multiple times and get his ass to the links, and one of a few final chances considering his age to participate and maybe win a freakin "major" on a true links! Validation, I guess some seek it and some don't.
