I've had a few neighbors with yards that look like the scruff at Pinehurst.  I never worried that they couldn't maintain that look.

True; but at some point, you run the lawn mower over it and you have a full ground coverage. Only when you get close do you see that its weeds, not grass.

The whole point here is sand with some green shoots. Not wall to wall weeds.

Spray for Broad Leaf 4-6 times a year?  Shouldn't cost more than 35k to 40k.

Would controlled burning once/twice/thrice a year be as effective as controlled application of chemicals in the supposedly 'natural' areas?

With all that pine straw (and for that matter pine trees) around wouldn't controlling burning be rather challenging?

Seems more cost effective than the alternative.

That would definitely be something to think about - but there is water piped around the whole course - I'm not suggesting a conflagration, more like this:

or even this:

When I was at Long Cove, we found out just how susptable those native  plants-love grass and spartina bakeri-are to drift and especially 3 way. Looks of spot spray and pre-emerging. I wouldn't recommend boom spraying or spraying over the top of the native grasses.
