Par 3's at Quail Hollow
« on: May 06, 2014, 08:16:57 AM »
My son and I were at the Wells on Saturday and talked about the similarity between the first three par 3's.  Holes 2, 6 and 13 are slightly downhill to a green with bunkers short left and long right.  Granted they can play different distances, but last year would have been a perfect time to add some variety to the golf course.

These 3s have always struck me (spectator) as the least interesting holes on the course.

2 and 6 are generally the same direction too, although 6 is probably 50 yards longer, and both are majorly downhill. I agree they're too similar but I don't have a problem with 13, or 17.

I believe the 6th was originally a par-four and was changed at some point (Palmer?). It swapped pars with #8, which plays in the opposite direction and has been changed a few times.

Without knowing anything other than looking at old aerials, it looks like #6 was shortened to allow for #7 to be lengthened significantly. Was 7 originally a par-four as well?

I like the course and enjoy the back 9 in particular but don't really think of the par 3s out there as being a plus to the course or as being much fun.
2 is a precise short hole as the green is large and sloping and a miss right is bad.  6 is a long slog, 13 is medium length and severe to miss and touchy to putt, and 17 is about scary not fun.  On 17, most just miss right and have a touchy chip to the water.  The course has a lot of good par 4's and 5's though and I do like holes 2 and 13 pretty well.
