Roll call: NYC GCA'ers?
« on: March 05, 2014, 01:11:33 PM »
Curious to see how many of our members here live in NYC?

I'm in Brooklyn and not currently a member of any clubs. I've played almost every public course in the metro area in the 8 years I've been here but now I'm mostly out on Long Island at Bethpage and Tallgrass. Was glad to have South Bay as a decent nearby option last year. Excited for Ferry Point next year; hopefully getting tee times won't be a complete nightmare.

I'm assuming there aren't many of you out there, besides the one person I already know, but would love to be wrong.

Hi Mark!

I just moved to Park Slope last summer from Arlington, VA. My clubs are still in storage in VA, haven't yet had the opportunity to play any golf in NY, but that will change this spring I hope. I'd love to join any willing GCAers this year.

Fantastic. I'm right next door in Prospect Heights. Would love to have another GCA member in my regular group. We play every weekend, many times doing 36 since it's such a chore getting anywhere. We're all in our early/mid 30s. Get those clubs up here and get in touch!

I recently moved to the city as well (the village, specifically). I haven't had the opportunity to play here yet but (with this winter!) am dying to do so! I would love to get games together with you all.

Excellent. I'll definitely put something together for us all when the weather improves a bit.

Me and another GCA member (Michael Felton) were so hankering for golf last weekend that we made the 1.5 hour drive down to Sea Oaks in Tuckerton, NJ. Closest public to NYC that was open. This weekend looks to be a little more promising for course openings, so i'll definitely be getting out again, if anyone is interested. Won't be looking to drive that far again so hopefully at least Marine Park is open.

Here in NYC for many years antagonizing GCAers Mucci and Slapper in New Jersey among others.  Weekends are often in Connecticut playing at Yale when The Boss gives me a free pass.

Have never slept in a car to play Bethpage, and I hope I can actually play real golf with a real handicap in a year or two when my older son moves to the next stage of life - college.

I may play Hubbard Heights in Stamford, CT on Sunday if it is cold enough to keep the golfers away :), but my Autistic son walks with me, so I can't really invite new guys. There may still be snow in CT too.

If you have questions, just ask.

Another Manhattanite. Planning to play with Mark on Sunday. Let's hope MP is open, otherwise Jersey again I guess.

Been in NYC for over a decade now, though I still loyally root for all my Philly sports teams!

Currently on the UES.

Would love to play BP Black again this year, and still have not played Red which I hear is nearly as good.  Also excited for Ferry Point which should be a great addition to the area's public options.

Come summer, I am usually up for a round at Montauk Downs or Tallgrass out east.

I live in Manhattan but spend weekends in CT.  Used to belong to a private club there but dropped out when my passion for the game ebbed.  Only played four times last year, 3 of which  were on a California vacation in February.  Hoping to play a little more this year - 10-15 times - and practice some as well.  Haven't figured out where I will play to get in more rounds.

The problem with golf is that it takes too much time and the best way to participate (in my opinion), private club membership, is very expensive because you pay for a lot of stuff other than the golf.

I'm born and raised in South Jersey, Kev. Voorhees to be exact. Where are you from? Perhaps we should make this thread all about what the Phillies are hiding with Cole Hamels' shoulder?

Sounds like we got a lot more NYC members here than i thought. One thing I'm considering doing is putting together a season-long series of match play events for us public course humpers—maybe one per month starting in April—with a final in early October. Maybe have it be so people only need to make a minimum of 3 events to qualify for the final. Probably play somewhere like Tallgrass, since it's a good course for match play and always easy to get multiple times on weekends. I'll think more on it and post back in this thread.

Have lived in NYC since 97'.

Somewhat sadly I am moving to Westchester in July.

Play most of my golf at Hudson National in Westchester.  Would be happy to host any GCA folks and/or join a round elsewhere.

Weekends are very hard with the little kids but weekdays I can usually do.

Thanks for starting this thread.

I live in the "Sixth Borough" otherwise known as Miami Beach.  Originally being from NYC, I fortunately I find myself back very often throughout the year.  In the past I have enjoyed many of the course mentioned herein like TallGrass, Bethpage, and Montauk Downs plus others like Ash Brook in NJ and Richter Park in CT.  I look forward to meeting some more Tri-State GCA'er in the upcoming season.

One more here.  Moved out of Manhattan last year and now live in Garden City on the island.  Would definitely be interested in joining any of you guys for some rounds over the summer.

Live in Manhattan as well.  Love the Bayonne photo, definitely one of my favorite courses in the area.  Lucky enough to have a few friends who are members.  Golf is definitely tough here in the city but I try to get out to the public courses in Jersey when i can or play a few CC's with friends who are members.  Thinking of joining Forest Hill Field Club this year, pretty reasonable cost wise and close to the city.

Let me know if ever get together with everyone for a round.

I'm not in NYC but I'm in Northern NJ about 30 minutes from the GW bridge (without traffic). I play alot of different places but I am a member at an architecturally insignificant club called Ramsey Golf and Country Cub, although it might be Americas most penal golf course. We have water and/or OB on 18 holes and its narrow.

I'm in Fairfield CT, joined a club out here last year but it's a "one and done" as we figured out a 1 year old and busy travel schedule didn't make it as efficient as I hoped.  Back to Smith Richardson in Fairfield, CT for me...and anywhere else I can muster an invite too...hope I can join up if you guys are planning something in the NYC metro area-I would like to meet some GCA'ers in 2014.
