Tour players representing golf courses.

Switching back and forth this weekend between the regular and senior tour I was struck by how few tour players are sponsored by golf courses or resorts yet many senior players are sponsored.

I assume it's about money but even some of the lesser known players on the tour need money.

What PGA player represents a club?

St. Andrews Beach dropped Geoff Ogilvy just before he won the U.S. Open.   :P   They made a lot of wrong moves!

It's not just the money on the players' side of the ledger.  Money is not flowing so freely from golf courses as sponsors now that housing-development golf is dead and buried.  If you want a player to represent your course, you hire him to design it.  If you hire one of us non-players to design the course, you're probably not in the market for a player to represent you on Tour.

Perhaps this demonstrates why this doesn't happen much.  Close House must be loviing having spent all that money and soemone still thinks Westwood has a connection with a club I'm not sure he ever had a relationship with.

I think the days when all tour players got money for attachments has gone. We have about 20 pro's properly attached to our course, though not one on the European tour now. Some wear the logo clothing, some don't. We don't pay anyone, except we pay Gordon Brand jnr for the logo'ing of his clothing. I think even with a full European card you don't get much. It's all at the top but it is more geared to clothing and branding than of value to a golf course. You can do much better advertising wise these days than toss money into those caverns, but go back 30 years it did work.

I'm pretty sure Westwood gets well rewarded for "endorsing" Close House.  To be fair, though, he does visit reasonably frequently and the membership think he engages well with them when he does.

Lee Westwood is at the top end of the European Tour though, those players can provide value. Rewind 30 years if Tony Jacklin was attached to Tracy Park you automatically thought it had to be good so you visited. Now it more directs you to find out more and with the transparency of the internet we can kind of check out the course via its website, picture, flyovers etc. Internet is still that buzz word. It easily allows us to find our more. LW has acted as the 'home page'.

Do Els or Ross Fisher have any Wentworth branding on their kit?

Lots of European based pros are attached to Queenwood.

Sam Torrance and Paul McGinley are attached to Sunningdale, though I'm pretty sure they aren't sponsored as such.

Although they don't get him to wear their logo anywhere, Lindrick and Worksop both use Lee Westwood on their website and in advertising. Lindrick also has Danny Willett on their website. I'd be suprised if any money changed hands though, probably just courtesy of the of the course etc.
