Letter of Introduction
« on: November 26, 2013, 05:38:59 PM »
Hi everybody,

like fellow newcomer Matt, I am a longtime reader of this site and finally decided to ask to be included into this fine group.

I think my addition to the group increases the number of german contributors by quite a margin, so I hope I'll be able to chime in regarding courses in this area. I am probably not the most architectural sound guy on these board,s but I realized while following the discussions, that my taste in golf courses mirrors a lot of the views in here, so I hope to fit right in.

I live in the northern part of germany, pay my bills as a journalist (though only on the side for a golf magazine) and run a german golf blog in my spare time. I'm a member of a small golf club no one in these forums has ever played and quite frankly, no one of you need to :-)

As far as famous golf architecture goes I just lost my Doak, Coore and MacKenzie virginity which is why I finally stopped worrying about being unqualified to post here and asked Ran to join your ranks.

I'm very excited to learn more about golf architecture from you guys and hope to meet a few of you in person. I almost joined you for the BUDA in the Netherlands since I know Ulrich Mayring from another golf forum, but unfortunately back problems stopped me this year from playing more than the occasional round of golf.

A very warm welcome from the south coast of England.

Nice to have a new face from a different golfing nation.

Welcome!  But please be careful how you phrase certain things!  I think you intended to say that you have recently played one of my courses.  Which one?

Is there a standard German expression meaning "buttboy"?

On a more serious note: My only real connection with Germany, sad to say, is World War II. My dad, a captain in the U.S. Army, ended the war as the commandant of a prison camp at Bad Aibling. I guess he must have been a decent fellow to his prisoners; years later, in a small town near here in Minnesota, he ran into one of his German captives -- who had come to America to be the maitre d' of a well-known inn here, and who greeted my dad with a loud and friendly greeting: "Mein Kapitän!" They became friends, here.

Ruediger,

Welkom vanuit Nederland waar wij allemaal redelijk Duits kunnen spreken maar alleen als je richting Noordwijk of Zandvoort komt voor een gezellig rondje golf.

I enjoy arguing with Ulrich. We don't see eye to eye on German golf or German architectural talent or lack thereof.

My opinion is lack thereof given that Germany is such a strong golf country it amazes me there are no top international architects coming from there. Please both enlighten and correct me if I'm wrong.

Colt being clearly the top architect in Germany.

Personally, I work 4 days a week in Munich these days so occasionally sample some golf down that way. It's very average with nice views of the alps.

I bet Ulrich has played your local club, he's sampled a lot in Germany and his gift of keeping stats is truly impressive to say the least - and very very German.

Hope you enjoy the treehouse!

Welcome.Born in Wurzburg  and was a dual citizen for my first 20and 1/2 years. Had to choose at age 21 and since I don't speak German the West German military did not seem like a good option.

Herr Meyer:

Welcome!  But please be careful how you phrase certain things!  I think you intended to say that you have recently played one of my courses.  Which one?

I had the pleasure of going to Australia for four weeks and made it a priority to pay a visit to Barnbougle. Which is a good and a bad thing. Good, because it was probably the best golfing experience I ever had. And bad because my expectations for the next round on one of your courses is now sky-high.

I have relatives in Dortmund. Are you anywhere near there?

Well, anything in germany is near compared to the US or Australia. But I live 300 km north of there which, for germany, doesn't fit the description.

I think I'm with you on this one. The best known currently working is probably David Krause, but my experiences with his courses didn't exactly woo me. He did a few decent ones, but I downright hated WinstonLinks which you posted in another topic.

Rolf-Stephan Hansen did a marvellous piece with Budersand, but I think he only did one or two other courses which I haven't played.

And then there's Bernhard Langer, but that's a topic for another day  ;D

You have to be a bit more specific. We are a small golfing country, but the area of Dusseldorf has quite a few courses

Plus One...Losing one's "_____ virginity," while not a turn of phrase that I prefer to read or ever consider saying, is definitely a "thing" I've encountered herein and certainly implies nothing beyond playing an architect's course for the first time.

Oh, you're right David. Since he has a practice in Germany and a german-sounding name I never questioned his nationality...

That leaves probably Thomas Himmel as the most prolific german architect due to his work at Son Gual.

Welcome Rüdiger <== you'll get a real "Umlaut" from me

the first rule on this board is to not listen to David Davis. He is Dutch (somewhat), full of lofty ideas and, frankly, has lost any grip on reality since he played Pine Valley and Cypress Point :)

Seriously, I can endorse Rüdiger to the group, he has the best golf blog that I know at http://der-linksgolfer.de/. Now, before you go to his site, the blog is in German and "Linksgolfer" does not mean what you think, it means "Left-Handed Golfer". And anyway, the guy is a little crazy, just look at his subway map:

http://der-linksgolfer.de/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Golf-Majors-Subway_2013.pdf

But to his credit, he wrote the diary of Tiger Woods for a while, that was one of the most hilarious columns I've read:

http://der-linksgolfer.de/category/satire/

Again, welcome to the jungle.

Welcome Rudiger from a half-German living in the States (my family has been in the States since about 1840)

Glad you're a left handed golfer.  Just be careful if you ever play Merion East - that first tee for a leftie can be pretty scary! :)
