I think people are mistaking difficult with great. On the difficult scale the par 3 1st at Winterfield, Dunbar blows PV #5 out of the water.

John they have filmed numerous movies in an area behind the 7th green and 8th tee.

7 at Hankley and 10 Sunny New are great holes but still slightly too long. A 4/5 iron is a good shot where I'm hopeful of hitting the green not expecting to.

Hardest is PV #5

Best is Royal Melbourne #5

Most fun is Hidden Creek #4 (F&F)

My favorite is Hankley Common #7

Greatest....who knows!

I am kinda partial to #3 at Ballyhack.  It has one of the most interesting greens anywhere.  Pin placement is everything.  Sometimes it can play redanish and sometimes it calls for a high fade.  Sometimes I will play two or three balls. One from 150 yards, another from 175, and a third from 200ish.  Great fun.

SIDEBAR....Does the position of the hole on the golf course determine how great a hole it is?

For instance...the 5th at PV...from the sounds of it, it's a pretty tough hole (still waiting for my invite).

..but it's the 5th hole.  I can make double and have 13 hoes to make up for my error.

It it were the 16th or 17th then it would be even tougher as your nerves would be that much more frail deep into a good round.

Ot the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf be located somewhere in the last few holes?

Joe,

If you walk off 5 at PV having made a telephone number, let me tell you, you're not eyeing the card looking for where you're going to make up the strokes!

Yes, Addy's 13th is a fine example of the 3+ type.  I think the general problem with this length hole is needs to be found to give it that visual impact which competes with length in one's memory.  I don't think archies generally look to find this length hole and its probably quite a rare find. I am not really a fan of this length hole, but no question, when it is sitting there the hole should be incorporated into the 18.

Would the 17th at TPC Sawgrass count as 'inland'? I guess Henry Longhurst probably never saw the hole.
As to tough, the 1st at Church Stretton is certainly that - http://www.churchstrettongolfclub.co.uk/hole-1

I remember playing the Addington about 20 years ago when someone in the previous match aced the 13th with a 4 iron - there were some celebrations!

Its a tough hole, but as ever, really satifying when you get it right.

How about the 6th at Painswick? Wasn't this also another Henry Longhurst favourite?

It was indeed.   The Beacon!   A view all the way to the bridge at Bristol.

Giles,

A 4-iron to the 13th at Add in the early 90s is no mean feat!

He was a very good low single figure, 4 or 5 and not playing too much - he had considered trying to turn pro but decided not to. He was also a v. good footballer. Too much talent for one person.

Doc-I concur with Shinny 11 and would introduce Yale 9 into the discussion. Might not be the best but it's up there.

 8) ;D ;)

Warner Shelly , noted Pine Valley  historian and member for over 50 years prior to his passing played PV 's 5th as a short par four as he got a little older.  Utility wood short of the road , 8 or 9 iron to the center of the green with many a four and an occasional three. Not the worst strategy in stroke play , even though seldom used .

Remember however , that Mr. Shelly was quite a good lag putter.

#13 Winged Foot East

VKmetz,

Interesting that you'd pick # 13.

While it's the longest of WFW's par 3's, I never considered it superior to other par 3's at WFW or WFE.

# 10 and # 3 on WFW always seemed more demanding, from tee shot, to recovery to putting.

I'd be interested in what Neil Regan says.

Patrick:

I concur with VK.

I think #13 WFE is not only the best par 3 but also the best hole on the entire 36 hole complex.

Pat,
  It's 13 East.
Wait until you see the restoration of 3 East, just completed.
It may be a rival to 13.

Gene,

As you know, I might agree.
Every time I play it, I think it's even better than I had thought.
That does not happen on many holes. Only the best.

Here are a few views from recent years, all before Gil H. did a proper recovery of the old perimeters. All he did was push the edges of the putting surface out a foot or two, so they seem to drape over the hilltop, and bring the false front down 15 more feet or so. It looks even better today than ever.

Hello Neil, Gene and all others,

Those are lovely pictures of #13 at Winged Foot (East).  Historically, it seems that #10 on Winged Foot (West) has been the par 3 hole mentioned as a great one shot hole.  During my one round at Winged Foot (West), the 10th hole made a powerful impression.

Here is a 1965 article by Dan Jenkins which cites the great 10th hole:

John,

Here are a couple of pictures of West #10, back in the day.
You can see how much the perimeter had shrunk in 20 years.

And what looks like the loss of a bunker and far better looking bunkers back in the day.
